Package, Transport, Feed focuses on reducing food waste in New York City while feeding the hungry. We chose this issue because over 133 billion pounds of uneaten food are thrown out every year, yet 49.1 million families live in food insecure households.

What is a food insecure household?

We worked with local bakeries, who gave us their unpurchased bread at end of the day, and distributed the goods to seniors at a local senior center the next day. Additionally, we teamed up with McDonald's over spring break and fed over 120 seniors breakfast.

Failures

One challenge that we faced was finding a bakery or restaurant to donate food for our cause. Asking multiple bakeries and even restaurants, we were rejected quite a few times. Not only that, during our first event, some of the seniors were not able to follow our directions and took more than one breakfast item. In the end, we ultimately ran out of food and could not give everyone breakfast.

What's Next?

We plan to hold another event in our community and give food to people who need it. But in order to hold another event, we plan to fix the problems we had and ensure everyone eats a hardy McDonald's breakfast.
