urban art gallery Rehabilitating downtown Nanaimo with large-scale art

After years as a blight on the beautiful harbour city core, the space located on the corner of Terminal - Commercial – Wallace in downtown Nanaimo, is to be repurposed as Nanaimo’s first Urban Art Gallery under the artistic direction and execution of Humanity in Art. Relying on community and crowd funding, this project will be managed by our non-profit foundation, Humanity in Community.

  • Beautify the Terminal Avenue - Commercial Street – Wallace Street area and bring a creative, colourful and eye-catching new feature to downtown Nanaimo in the form of an Urban Art Gallery.
  • Reduce vandalism, graffiti, and loitering by increasing positive foot traffic to the area.

Due to the size of the building and eagerness for action from the downtown community, there will be an open call for artists. After selecting up to 5 artists, the first round of painting will commence May 2018 and end September 2018

All artistic work will follow the theme “clean lines and good vibes,” and will be approved by the project management team prior. Artists will be required to use drop cloths and respect the community and environment around them.

All finished artwork will be coated with anti-graffiti coating. Humanity in Community will also provide upkeep of the area and mural maintenance.

In addition to crowd-funding, we will be working with community businesses and partners to meet our ultimate fundraising goal of $10,000. This will ensure that our artists do not incur any costs for paint or supplies.
