1. What Chemicals are used to put out Chemical / Liquid fires?

Monoammonium Phosphate and Sodium Bicarbonate are used to put out class B fires. There are five different classes of fires; Class A, B, C, D and E. Class B fires are fires that are causes by Chemicals (flammable liquids such as paraffin, gasoline, grease, oils, etc). The best way to extinguish a Class B fire is to smother the oxygen within it. This removes one of the aspects of the fire triangle which, in turn, puts it out. This can be achieved through the use of a foam fire extinguisher, CO2 fire extinguisher or dry powder fire extinguisher. Carbon Dioxide extinguishers work because Carbon Dioxide molecules are heavier than Oxygen molecules. When the liquid Carbon Dioxide inside the extinguisher expands into a Gas, the Carbon Dioxide pushes out any Oxygen surrounding the fire. Without Oxygen available to fuel the chemical reaction, the fire goes out quickly.

2. How do Firefighters minimize risk to Personal Safety?

Firefighters minimize the risk of getting by wearing the correct safety gear and equipment while on-duty that is heat and fire resistant. Firemen wear; standard helmet, nomex hood, bunker coat, portable radio, fire resistant gloves, self-contained breathing apparatus, bunker pants, boots, two shirts underneath jacket, belt, two fire resistant work pants and boots. The breathing apparatus is what allows Firefighters to breath in smoke-filled buildings. The device consisting of tanks of oxygen, and a mouthpiece. All of this equipment is fire proof. This helps the firefighter stay safe and not get injured.

3. What Chemicals are used to clean up spills?

Many of the compounds in petroleum are toxic - especially if they are in high concentrations. The chemicals in petroleum that do not evaporate quickly are “biodegradable," which means they can be degraded or “eaten up" by bacteria and other microbes in the soil. Firefighters try to stop the leak by first turning off the nozzles or valves from the leaking container.
