The Principal's PEN Parent edition 5.1

Welcome Back to The Principal's Pen! Happy New Year...We have BIG PLANS for 2017!

Post from the PTO

.

Got ideas? PTO is looking for some help! We need a new Fundraising Chair to help us in our efforts to raise money to support Dunbar students, teachers, and new initiatives. Our past chair set up awesome events, such as spirit nights at Mi Patron and FunQuest where the businesses donated a portion of sales to our PTO. Duties include attending our monthly PTO meetings, held the second Monday of each month at 6:30 pm and working with local, regional, or national organizations (if necessary) to raise money for our PTO. New ideas are welcome! Interested or want to learn more? Contact Jessie Thompson, PTO President at jmthompson5@gmail.com.

BoxTops—Just keep clipping, just keep clipping…Hopefully you have noticed the awesome BoxTops drop box in the lobby at Dunbar. Keep clipping the little rectangles found on hundreds of products you know and love -- including cereals, snacks, food storage bags, meals and sides, paper products and juices. Each BoxTop that is clipped and turned in to the school is worth 10 cents. You can also increase the value of those little rectangles—download the BoxTops App—free for IOS and Android. Scan items and your receipts and we get a bonus in addition to the ones you clip from the package! Questions? Contact (stacydarlenecarter@gmail.com) or Nanette Boswell (ntboswell@gmail.com)

Go here to find out more and get the free app. Our school is called “Paul Dunbar School for Innovation” in the app.

Spirit Week

Spirit week has been postponed due to snow days. We will notify students and parents when we reschedule.

Report cards went home last Friday. We ask that all students get their report card signed and return them to their homeroom teacher so we will know that parents saw their child's report card. You can also send a note to their homeroom teachers confirming you saw their report card.

The Golden Poet Award

Our next Golden Poet Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, January 24th at 6:00PM. We will also be preforming a ribbon cutting ceremony for several local organizations who have signed up as partners in education to help support our students and staff here at Dunbar Students can earn the Golden Poet status once per nine weeks by achieving three out of four of the following standards:

  • two hours of community service (must complete a community service form in the main office. See Ms. Bell for a form),
  • no discipline referrals or behavior issues,
  • no unexcused absences,
  • a positive referral

Students who achieve the Golden Poet status will be recognized on our morning news and placed in a quarterly drawing for prizes. This is just another way for us to show our kids that doing the right thing, and going the extra mile, does pay off.

***Don't forget to have your child complete a community service form in the main office. See Ms. Bell for a form.***

Here is a list of students who have earned the Golden Poet Award for Quarter 2 (If you believe your child earned this award but is not listed below please contact Ms. Murphy in guidance 434-515-5310. It may be that they forgot to turn their community service form in...we want to award as many students as possible).

Encourage our teachers- Only TWO staff members have been recognized by parents this year...We know our teachers and staff members work very hard and need a pat on the back every now and then. If you would like to recognize a staff member for going above and beyond, you can click here to submit a positive referral using our Google Form, or email me with your nominations browndr@lcsedu.net . (Our teachers appreciate this more than you know!)

The Principal's Challenge

Our Principal's Challenges have been going great! These challenges are simple and quick acts of kindness and respect towards peers and staff. Students will NOT receive any reward or special acknowledgement for completing these challenges. It's just our way of giving them the opportunity to "Raise the BAR!" Please help us out with this by asking your child what the challenge for the week is and how they are completing it. Next week's challenge is to simply "Write thank you notes of appreciation for our custodians, secretaries, and cafe staff." Students can give these notes to their homeroom teachers and homeroom teachers can deliver them to Ms. Bell to be distributed..

Final Thoughts: What is innovation? What makes P.L. Dunbar Middle School for Innovation innovative? That is a question our staff has been evaluating lately. If you have ideas you would like to share around this topic shoot me an email so we can hear from our parents. browndr@lcsedu.net Raising the BAR!

Special thanks to our PTO, Mr. Fleshman's and Ms. Edson's leadership classes! Our leadership students created "quote signs" to provide inspiration around the school for their peers. Thanks to a generous donation from our PTO, we were able to have their signs installed around our school. We are very proud of our PTO's and students' thoughtfulness, and hope to install more in the near future (See pictures below).
