“Old Days”

Ingrid Michaelson

We took the wrong way down

You see just one side now

Guess that's what life's about

What you remember

What we remember

There's only one thing left

It's what we tell ourselves

The little lies they help us to remember

How we remember

Heaven help the ones who fly away

Heaven help the ones who have to stay and place the blame

Maybe what you think of me won't change

But I still

Hold on, hold on

Hold on to the old days

The old days

Pack up the life that's left

Except that one blue dress*

I always tried my best

Do you remember?

I'll take it year by year (oh year by year)

Watching the dust go clear**

We're all afraid to fear

Or to remember

How we remember

Heaven help the ones who fly away (ooh)

Heaven help the ones who have to stay and place the blame

Maybe what you think of me won't change

But I still

Hold on, hold on

Hold on to the old days

I'm sorry, that I never knew

Heaven help the ones who fly away

Heaven help the ones who have to stay and place the blame

Maybe what you think of me won't change

But I still

Hold on, hold on

Hold on, I hold on

Hold, on, hold on

Hold on, I hold on

Hold on, hold on

I hold on, hold on

Hold on, hold on

Hold on to the old days

*The writer uses the metaphor of the blue dress as a good memory that she wants to forget. I think this song represents a couple that had a strong relationship that had a rough ending. I feel that the guy left her and she never knew or understood why he was upset or left. She is telling him to move on and she is trying to move on but she remembers the good times they had together.

**The writer uses the metaphor of the dust going clear to represent the rough ending that their relationship had. When a big event happens "dust" is stirred up and takes days, weeks, months, or years to finally clear and go back to normal. This also means that the couple's relationship ended with a bang and took each of them awhile to move on from this event. This adds to the overall aspect of the song because it stresses how good their relationship was and then how badly it ended.

"This Town"

Niall Horan

Waking up to kiss you and nobody's there

The smell of your perfume still stuck in the air

It's hard

Yesterday I thought I saw your shadow running round*

It's funny how things never change in this old town

So far from the stars

And I want to tell you everything

The words I never got to say the first time around

And I remember everything

From when we were the children playing in this fairground

Wish I was there with you now

If the whole world was watching I'd still dance with you**

Drive highways and byways to be there with you

Over and over the only truth

Everything comes back to you

I saw that you moved on with someone new

In the pub that we met he's got his arms around you

It's so hard

So hard

And I want to tell you everything

The words I never got to say the first time around

And I remember everything

From when we were the children playing in this fairground

Wish I was there with you now

As if the whole world was watching I'd still dance with you

Drive highways and byways to be there with you

Over and over the only truth

Everything comes back to you

You still make me nervous when you walk in the room

Them butterflies they come alive when I'm next to you

Over and over the only truth

Everything comes back to you

And I know that it's wrong

That I can't move on

But there's something about you

If the whole world was watching I'd still dance with you

Drive highways and byways to be there with you

Over and over the only truth

Everything comes back to you

You still make me nervous when you walk in the room

Them butterflies they come alive when I'm next to you

Over and over the only truth

Everything comes back to you

Everything comes back to you

*The writer uses personification of a shadow running around to show that he can't forget about his ex girlfriend. This is personification because a shadow of someone who isn't there can't run around by itself. I believe that this song is about a couple that were together and then the girl left the guy alone. After the girl left him he still has been unable to move on from her and he keeps seeing little parts of her around everywhere.

**The writer uses personification of whole world watching the couple to show that he would do anything to fix what happened between them. This is personification because the whole world can't be watching two people dance. This shows that he loves her so much that it does not matter who watches them together.

"Hello"

Adele

Hello, it's me

I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet

To go over everything

They say that time's supposed to heal ya

But I ain't done much healing

Hello, can you hear me

I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be

When we were younger and free

I've forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet*

There's such a difference between us

And a million miles

Hello from the other side

I must have called a thousand times**

To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done

But when I call you never seem to be home

Hello from the outside

At least I can say that I've tried

To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart

But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore

Hello, how are you?

It's so typical of me to talk about myself I'm sorry

I hope that you're well

Did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened

It's no secret that the both of us

Are running out of time

So hello from the other side

I must have called a thousand times

To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done

But when I call you never seem to be home

Hello from the outside

At least I can say that I've tried

To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart

But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore

Ooooohh, anymore

Ooooohh, anymore

Ooooohh, anymore

Anymore

Hello from the other side

I must have called a thousand times

To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done

But when I call you never seem to be home

Hello from the outside

At least I can say that I've tried

To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart

But it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore

*The writer uses the hyperbole to exaggerate how good their relationship was that everyone thought it was great. This shows that everyone in the world loved their relationship. The couple had a great time together and it eventually came to an end.

**The writer uses the hyperbole of calling an unreasonable amount of times to show that she misses her boyfriend. She misses him and wants to talk to him again.

Before Performing

By Emily Ross

Before the curtain rises

Waiting anxiously backstage

Time creeps for the number before to finish

Running through the number one hundred times

Hoping for a flawless performance

Remembering to smile

Butterflies consume as anticipation grows

Being excited to put on a show

Now it is finally time to take the stage to entertain

The roar of the crowd confirms a fantastic performance
