Human Genome Project by Ashley and trevor

What is the advancement in Bio-Technology?

The advancement in bio-technology is human genomes. It consists of a persons genetic make-up of 23 chromosome pairs. https://www.genome.gov/

How does the technology work?

It determines the exact order of the base pairs in a segment of DNA using sequencing.

Why is this technology important?

The Human Genomes Project is important because it lets people know what their genomes are and to find the accurate sequence of the 3 billion DNA base pairs and 20,000-25,000 genes they may have.

How has this technology impacted medicine, forensics, or agriculture?

Using Human Genomes, doctors are able to diagnose patients with diseases that they have, due to their genetic background.

What are the potential problems associated with this technology?

Many Americans fear that if they are tested, they will be discriminated due to their genetics. These fears will patients to skip testing. Due to this, laws have been passed to prevent workplace discrimination

What are the ethical considerations relevant to this technology?

Some ethical considerations were privacy and fairness in the use of genetic information, including the potential for genetic discrimination in employment and insurance, and the integration of new genetic technologies into the practice of clinical medicine.
