Facts and Figures

The city of Liverpool has around 495,000 people. It is located in the north-west of England at the confluence of the river Mersey and the Irish Sea. The area on which Liverpool is located is 111.84 square kilometres. By the way, Liverpool has the area code 0151 and The Beatles are from here.

The port of Liverpool is located on the east side of the river Mersey in the North West of England approximately one hour from Manchester.

The Liverpool Football Club is a very good football team. Its nickname is "The Reds". The German Jürgen Klopp is the manager. It was founded on the 3rd of June 1852.

Liverpool won the European Capital of Culture title in 2008.

The Titanic started from here in 1912.

History

The history of Liverpool starts in the year 1190, when everyone knew Liverpool as "Liuerpul“, that means a pool or creek with muddy water. Some people say the name "Liverpool" came from a bay called "Liver" or "Lever". King John founded the city in 1207, at that time it had only seven streets in a shape of an "H“.

The slave history began here and the Titanic started from here. Liverpool was in the 19th century an important trading city for the world. As a result, the city invested money into the skyline.

The trade with Africa and the West Indians was more important like the trade with Ireland and coastal parts of England and Wales because of the slave trade.

Sights and Museums

Liverpool has a lot of sights. There are many beautiful cathedrals and you can see The Three Graces (see photo) from the Liverpool Museum. The Three Graces are named after an old godess.

Interesting Museums

In Liverpool there are a lots of interesting museums. The U-boat story is a museum about a Nazi-u-boat. They found it in 1993 and you can visit the Royal Albert Dock. After that you can go to the Merseyside Maritine Museum if you want to learn something about Liverpool's maritime history. Liverpool has an International Slavery Museum because Liverpool was very important for the history of African slaves.

10 Mathew Street

There are also many museums about The Beatles. 10 Mathew Street is an important sight because the Rolling Stones and The Beatles often played here.

Museum of Liverpool & World Museum

In the Museum of Liverpool you can learn things about the local history of Liverpool. For people who want to learn something about natural history there is the World Museum Liverpool.

Walker Art Gallery

Liverpool also has the Walker Art Gallery. The Walker Art Gallery is an art gallery that houses one of the largest art collections in England, but some visitors say that it is only for art lovers.

Music

Liverpool has a long tradition of classic and pop music. Since the 1950s its pop and rock music scene has been important for the development of many bands and artists.

Liverpool is known for The Beatles. John Lennon (a member of The Beatles), Liz McClarnon, Paul McCartney (also a member of The Beatles), Natasha Hamilton and many more singers were born here.

Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC is an English football club in the first league, the Premier League. Liverpool FC has existed since 1892. The stadium, where they matches take place, was built in 1884. In this stadium Liverpool FC won 18 times the champhionship of the Premier league. Liverpool FC also won two times the Champions League and many more competitions. You can find the stadium, when you drive with bus number 26 from Liverpool one bus terminal. The adress is: Anfield Road, Anfield, Liverpool.

The club's anthem is "You'll never walk alone!'

The famous red-white shirts weren't "red-white" all the time. From 1892-1896 the shirts were "blue and white". In 1901 FC Liverpool was for the first time champions of football in England.

After the successful period the team drowned into the mediocracy of the English football league. But then in 2015 a German coach (Jürgen Klopp ) brought the success back to the team. At the moment FC Liverpool is at the second place of all the English football teams, but this is not all: they won the Champions League trophy in 2019. Now Liverpool is one of the best English football clubs.

FC Everton

The second football club in Liverpool is FC Everton. The club is also in the Premier League. FC Everton has existed since 1878. You see, it's an old football club. The stadium from FC Everton is the Goodison Park. It was built in 1892. The stadium is in the Goodison Road, Everton, Liverpool. FC Everton won nine times the Premier League, five times the English League Cup, nine times the English Supercup and one time the Euopean Champion Clubs' Cup. The Prince Rupert's Tower is an old prison tower in Everton. You can see this tower in the emblem of FC Everton.
