Burke's Garden Highest Mountain Valley in Virginia

The Bluemoonistic Team set out on another destination for our Day Trip Photo Blog series and truly found a "Happy Place"! We both have backgrounds in agriculture and wanted to see this fertile farmland valley for ourselves. It was only a 1.5 hour drive from Abingdon, Virginia, on Hwy 19 to Tazewell County. There is signage on the highway that easily leads you onto Route 623 and directly into Burke's Garden. You climb up over the mountain rims and then descend into a gorgeous valley that is still at 3000 feet elevation! The valley is 10 miles long and 4.5 miles wide. It was formed when a mountain collapsed upon itself over time to form this fertile land surrounded by mountain ridges. It gives this farming community a beauty like nothing we have ever seen before! We felt instantly isolated from the rest of the world. Let us show you the magic...

Burke's Garden

To locals it is simply called "The Garden". It is easy to see why with these majestic mountains surrounding the beautiful farms. Nothing fancy, no subdivisions or gated communities - just a place filled with peace, serenity and beauty. There are two loops that you follow and we found ourselves driving slowly soaking it all in and stopping to take photos. Did we mention peaceful?!

We made a couple of stops while there. The first was at Burke's Garden General Store. We wisely brought a cooler to take home some of the local bounty! Their current hours are Mon - Thurs. 9am-5pm, Friday 9am - 8pm offering an evening buffet, and Saturdays 9am - 6pm.

And YES, those locally grown peaches and apples are as good as they look! The smiles and gentle hospitality of the Amish owners made shopping a true joy! We need to offer a WARNING here to our responsibility to safety. The Amish do not wear face masks. They wanted us to know, however, that there has not been a single case of COVID-19 in the Garden! They respected the fact that we wore masks and hoped that other visitors would do the same. So we offer this information in the hopes that you will respect their way of life enough to bring a mask and wear it! Social Distancing is no problem.

We have never seen such beautiful, well-kept farms! You can tell they take pride in their community and it shows! Flowers, barn quilts and even a mill dam!

Our second stop was at Mattie's Place. There are two Amish stores in the community and both are great. They both serve food and have places to eat outside. Mattie's Place hours now are 9 - 6pm Mon - Sat. You can rent bikes at both stores to cruise through the community if you like.

Everything is easy to find here and whether you drive slow or take a bike you will enjoy the slower pace and bucolic scenes that will leave you with a peaceful feeling. You know we all need that these days!

Easy to find everything!

Even though you can have a wonderful lunch at either of the stores in Burke's Garden we made a special stop to one of our favorite places right off Hwy 19 at the Historic Crab Orchard Museum exit - Fisher & Company Restaurant. We first found them a year ago because their building was formerly a train depot located across the river and moved to this location. As you know, we are always looking for old train depots and were thrilled it is now a restaurant. Their farm-raised pulled pork is some of the best around and their sides like bean and corn salad are truly unique culinary experiences! They are taking all precautions for COVID-19 too, they have added outside patio seating, a plexi-glass center section and offer QR-codes at the tables for contactless menus! Everyone was wearing masks! Thank you Ashley Fisher for these safety measure and for remembering the "train people"!

We LOVED our visit to the Garden! It was a leisurely day that took us away from the craziness that is surrounding all of us for awhile! We'll definitely be back this fall. They normally have a Fall Festival the third Saturday in September but it has been cancelled this year. Look for it in 2021!!! We plan to take it in for sure!
