MANAGING ENERGY FROM OIL Extraction and Technology. Oil and natural gas is extracted from rock deep within the earth using a drilling method. Traditionally, this involves an oil rig, which is a structure with equipment used for drilling oil and gas. Without oil, humans would have to live without transportation.

Crude oil was made over millions of years from tiny plants and animals, called plankton. The plankton on the left would form oil in about 150 million years time if the sea bed is not disturbed. The plankton that lived in the Jurassic period made our crude oil. This was the time of the dinosaurs. Below are the 7 way to extract oil.

Extraction and development of oil

Some considerations should be made on locations for extracting oil.Crude oil is used to make petroleum products used to fuel airplanes, cars, and trucks; to heat homes; and to make products like medicines and plastics. Although petroleum products make life easier, finding, producing, and moving crude oil may have negative effects on the environment. Technological advances in exploration, production, and transportation of oil and enforcement of safety and environmental laws and regulations help to avoid and reduce these effects chemicals and other contaminants, which may require treatment before disposal or reuse. Because of the quantities of water used, and because of the complexity of treating some of the wastewater components, treatment and disposal are important and challenging issues. Wastewater is frequently disposed of by injection into deep wells, typically into non potable saltwater aquifers. The injection of wastewater can cause earthquakes that are large enough to be felt and that may cause damage.

the economic importance of the oil sands reaches beyond its role as a crucial source of global supply. Eighty percent of the world’s oil reserves are controlled by national governments or state-owned oil companies. Of the 20 percent that remains open to investment, about 50 percent is found in Canada’s oil sands.Through strict regulatory regimes and new technological developments, Canada is committed to the sustainable development of our resources, including reducing the carbon intensity of oil sands production and processing, and will become an increasingly important supplier of energy to world markets.

Traditionally oil and gas wells are vertically drilled. Technological advancements have allowed operators to save time, reduce operational costs, and lessen their environmental impact

What do we need to change in order for the industry to be more sustainable

Environmental sustainability is the ability to maintain rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non-renewable resource depletion that can be continued indefinitely.

Economic sustainability is the ability to support a defined level of economic production indefinitely.

In order to make oil more sustainable, give future generations the tools to be less oil dependent, and invest oil profits to create new resources. These will help future generations to maintain the same level of wealth and prosperity even as oil declines and disappears. There could be a law passed down for certain people to own a hybrid car or start depending on public transportation. In order to be more environmentally sustainable, mining operations are increasingly conducted in a manner that minimizes their impact on the surrounding environment, and leaves mine sites in an acceptable state for re-use by people or ecosystems. A number of management strategies and technologies are being developed and used by the mining industry to reduce the environmental impacts of mining.

All fossil fuels are nonrenewable, but not all nonrenewable energy sources are fossil fuels. Coal, crude oil, and natural gas are all considered fossil fuels because they were formed from the buried remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. So, unfortunately the next generations wont have have oil until the next couple million years because the last decades were irresponsible in conserving this limited resource.

"IF WE POLLUTE THE AIR, WATER AND SOIL THAT KEEPS US ALIVE AND WELL, AND DESTROY THE BIODIVERSITY THAT ALLOWS NATURAL SYSTEMS TO FUNCTION, NO AMOUNT OF MONEY WILL SAVE US"

"CONSERVING ENERGY AND THUS SAVING MONEY, REDUCING CONSUMPTION OF UNNECESSARY PRODUCTS AND PACKAGING AND SHIFTING TO A CLEAN-ENERGY ECONOMY WOULD LIKELY HURT THE BOTTOM LINE OF POLLUTING INDUSTRIES, BUT WOULD UNDOUBTEDLY HAVE POSITIVE EFFECTS FOR THE MOST OF US"
