Since 2007, Jeff Schroeder has been both a touring and recording member of the critically acclaimed band, the Smashing Pumpkins. Growing up in Los Angeles, Jeff played in numerous bands, most notably, the Lassie Foundation. As a member of the Lassie Foundation, Jeff recorded three albums and two EPs, which combined the sonic adventures of the British shoegaze movement with the vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys. Between 2001 and 2007, he left the music industry to pursue a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Los Angeles. While in graduate school, Jeff made one last album with the Lassie Foundation, Face Your Fun (2004).

In the fall of 2006, Jeff was introduced to Billy Corgan while he was in Los Angeles recording with the Smashing Pumpkins. By the spring of 2007, he was officially on board as a member of the newly reformed band and toured the world in support of Zeitgeist (2007). In the summer of 2007, the band played a series of historic concerts at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, California. These shows were captured in the concert DVD, If All Goes Wrong (2008). Beginning with the last two tracks recorded for the Teargarden by Kaleidyscope project and continuing with Oceania (2012) and Monuments for an Elegy (2014), Jeff began his tenure as part of the recording side of the Smashing Pumpkins.

In addition to his recent work with the Pumpkins, Jeff also produced an EP and a full-length album for Asian Chairshot, an alternative band he met while living in Seoul, South Korea in 2013-2014. Jeff currently resides in Chicago and is studying jazz guitar with Scott Hesse. He is also working on two musical projects: a soundtrack for a music documentary on the Champaign-Urbana, IL indie music scene and an EP of instrumental guitar music.

The models are very accurate in their inaccuracy. If you’ve ever used any of these pedals like the fuzz or even some of these early pitch-shifters…what makes them kind of fun and cool is that they don’t track super accurately, so it’s sort of a reactive process in that you’re playing, and you’re putting something in, but you’re also reacting to the sound. I like to have a lot of fun with that.


  • Revdelay - Reverse Delay is used for this complex sound. Turn off Reverse Delay and turn on DYN Drive to get a laid-back lead tone.
  • SpringVerb - Combining Spring Reverb and FD TWNR, this crunch tone is perfect for surf rock.
  • Tonight - This crunch tone that uses UK30 is ideal for backing parts. The Plate Reverb adds a beautiful ambience.
  • Drum - This lead tone with a rich mid-range combines Gold Drive and BG MK3.
  • Ava - This powerful lead tone uses Mono Pitch to add a sub octave to a high-gain sound generated by Sweet Drive and MS800.
  • 1+All - This high-gain sound uses Xtasy Blue and is perfect for playing riffs.
  • Whammy - PDL Pitch is used to add a pitch bend effect to a drive sound created by combining Gold Drive and MS800.
  • KloneTime - This crunch tone that combines Gold Drive and FD TWNR is great for single-coil pickups.
  • Swirling - This beautiful arpeggio sound is created by combining simple Chorus, Delay and UK30A effects.
  • FLTR&DLY - Together Seq Filter and Mod Delay generate sequenced phrases. You can synchronize the sequenced phrase with the song tempo (BPM) by tapping the TAP switch at the same rate.
  • 16 Delay - Setting the Delay Time to dotted 8th notes is good for playing muted single-note backing parts.


American guitar player Andrew J. Elstner, a musician from a musical family, has been playing guitar professionally for 27 years — four years as a teacher and fifteen years as a touring musician.

Currently a member of the band Torche, St. Louis-based Tilts, and formerly Riddle of Steel, Andrw's playing arcs across rock, metal, indie/math rock, classic rock, and heavier styles. Mixed in with those styles is also an obsession with British finger-style playing and American folk blues: from Bert Jansch and Martin Carthy, to Leo Kotke and John Fahey.

At the moment, southeastern U.S.-based band Torche takes up the bulk of Andrew's writing, recording, and touring schedule, playing shows all across the United States, West and Eastern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

I was somewhat skeptical of a digital pedalboard at first, mainly because I think like a lot of the stuff with other pedals ends up being unusable. With the G5n, I’ve been able to put it at the front end of my amp like a super-lead clone and have it sound awesome...very close to what I already use.


  • Torche Snk - Copying the tone from Torche track, "Snakes Are Charmed." MS800 and Delay.
  • ROS Rthm1 - Copying my rhythm tone from my Riddle of Steel days. Big, even, not too gainy or bright. Xtacy Blue, Rack Comp, EQ
  • ROS Deepr - Copying my tone from the "Deeper Still" track from Riddle of Steel. Same as previous but with Delay.
  • ROS Invsbl - From the "Invisible Hands" track from Riddle of Steel. Delay, FD TWNR, Rack comp and high oct. pitch shift.
  • ROS H.O.L. - From, "This is a house of Lies" from Riddle of Steel. Analog delay, Phaser (light phase), Xtacy Blue, Rack comp and EQ.
  • H4PZA - The "Hot For Pizza" patch. The title of a VH inspired Tilts song, and my nod to an EVH style Marshall tone.
  • Twin City - FD TWNR amp and cab sim, with spring reverb.
  • Boxy - UK30A and cab sim, with added comp and room reverb. Nice power pop tones.
  • BOGZ - My take on a hot rodded Bogner style tone. Xtacy Blue, BGN 4x12, ZNR and Mod Delay. Another awesome lead sound.
  • Shoegaze - Shoegaze bands love a FD TWNR on full blast. FD TWNR and cab sim, plus pedal verb and Mod delay for the sea-sick feel.

It’s easy to tweak and the layout is pretty’s just four pedals, program each one, it’s very obvious, and I don’t have to take a class on how to program's instant satisfaction, you know? Programming the patches is simple, obvious, and pretty much fool-proof in my opinion.
You can push this thing pretty hard in weird ways, which is always a favorite/preferred way of mine to look at things. The G5n is able to do things a board full of analog pedals wouldn’t be able to do, and you can allow this it to be the weirdo that it’s capable of being...freaky noise stuff, crazy spastic delay. I’m pretty stoked on the G5n and so I look forward to adding it to my "arsenal of weaponry".
