WEST TEXAS expressions JONATHAN JACKSON

SEPTEMBER 4 - OCTOBER 9, 2021

MEET THE ARTIST

Jonathan Paul Jackson is an African American Visual Artist from Houston, Texas. His multimedia practice includes painting, sculpture, and illustration. As a primarily self-taught artist, his self-guided studies informes his work. Delving into the Masters of Color such as Matisse, Warhol, and Gauguin, Jackson realized it was the method of application and not just the color itself that held such significance in their work. It is this practice of engaging in the past to create artwork of the future that truly guides his hand. This inspiration is evident in his series of paintings "Indigenous Contemporary" where he celebrates the storytelling found in indigenous sculptures and cultures. It can be seen in "Indigenous Contemporary 2" where he expands the series, adding technology to his process and bridges the gap between old and new. Lastly, it is found in Jackson's newest series "West Texas Series" as he reflects on the work of Monet and creates a visual journey during current circumstances when the ability to travel is limited.
