5 Celebrities That Became Their Own Anti-Drug Campaigns

1. Robert Downey Jr. - Burger King & Wife

From multiple felonies to multiple high profile roles, Robert Downey Jr. is truly one of the best comeback stories in Hollywood. The main question is; WHY? Why did he want to quit?

In an interview with Ny Daily News, he said, "I have to thank Burger King," he said. "It was such a disgusting burger I ordered. I had that, and this big soda, and I thought something really bad was going to happen." Right then and there, he threw all of the drugs in his car into the ocean. Talk about instantaneous commitment!

He also stated that his wife, Susan Downey, had a big role to play in him quitting completely. She insisted that before they got married, he had to be done with drugs for good. I guess love does overcome all! (source: dailymail.co.uk)

2. Russel Brand - Acceptance & Fear

The "Get Him to The Greek" comedian admitted to having an addiction at a very young age. One of the things that kept him sober for 14 years now is that at one point, he started being afraid of the fact that he might die. He was told that if he continues like that, in six month time, he's going to be dead, in prison, or in an asylum. (source: Top Documentary Films)

“The reason I can’t have drugs or drink today is because I know that I can’t manage it. As a drug addict, you have to accept that you can never have drink or drugs again," said Brand in an interview with The Independant. In efforts to help others who struggle with drug abuse, Russel Brand has begun multiple anti-drug campaigns. You go, mate!

3. Courtney Love - Religion & 'Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo'

Courtney Love or otherwise known as the late Kurt Kobain's wife, struggled with drug addiction for years and has even reportedly admitted to taking heroin while pregnant with daughter, Francis Bean Cobain. However, she has left that world behind her now and is following the ways of Buddhism.

"What really saved me was, obviously going to meetings and stuff like that, but I'm a Buddhist," she spilled. "I chant and I'm really serious about it. I chant twice a day."

"I'm Nichiren Buddhist so it's Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo," Love continued, referencing the devotional mantra. "So I sit there in the morning, 'Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo,' and it changed my life. Absolutely. It turned everything around." (Source: Us Magazine)

4. Keith Richards - Family & Time

Getting caught up with drugs is a pretty regular occurrence in the rock music industry, especially if you are from one of the most legendary rock bands of all time, The Rolling Stones. Throughout the years of him being responsible drug addict and a near death experience by taking dope laced with Strychnine, he never found a reason to quit drugs till he had his grandchildren.

In an interview with The DailyMail, he said that becoming a grandfather had encouraged him to stop rebelling and continued saying 'It was something that I had to stop because I realised there are experiments that go on too long. Some people can handle things and other people can't. If the drugs become more important than the music then you've lost the battle'. Richards is evidently loving being a grandad. So much so that he even wrote a children's book with daughter, Theodora Richards. Way to go Grandpa Keith!

5. Demi Lovato - Realisation & Lil' Sis

Being a child celebrity is never easy. For Demi Lovato, things have always been an uphill battle from struggling with suicidal thoughts at the age of 7 to going to rehab at the age of 18. The singer/songwriter has even admitted to needing to take drugs every 30 minutes to an hour. But ever since then, she's been able to change her life for the better and learnt to "Let It Go".

“I think at 19 years old, I had a moment where I was like, ‘Oh my God… that is alcoholic behaviour. [It’s] no longer, I’m young and rebellious and out having fun, it was, wow, I’m one of those people…I gotta get my s*** together,’” she explained. (source: Access Hollywood)

Following this, it was also her mother's ultimatum that pushed her to seek the help she needed. Dianna (mother) specifically said, ‘You know, we’re going to move back to Texas and you’re not going to be able to be around you’re little sister.’ The idea of not being able to see younger half-sister, Madison De La Garza, 11, who played Eva Longoria’s daughter on “Desperate Housewives,” was key to Demi finally making serious changes (source: Access Hollywood). Ever since then, the starlet has led an exemplary life for her family and little sister. Proud of you, Demi!

It is never easy to struggle with any form of addiction and be brave enough to admit it. However, these celebrities have stepped up and out of it through their own gusto while still very much in the public eye. For that, they deserve to be remembered for the things that they now do and not the things that they did.

The Infographic was designed towards the idea of minimalism & bringing life to a dark topic. The elements chosen was geared toward bringing light & life with the intention of showing that there is hope whatever the addiction is.
