Johnny Clem was born August 13, 1851 in Newark, Ohio.

Johnny, gathering up all his courage set off to join the Federal Army. He was only about 10 years old. When the 22nd Michigan marched through the south, Johnny jumped in line. He became very popular throughout the next couple of weeks, and the soldiers adopted him as their mascot.

The challenges Johnny faced were secretive and hard. He ran away from home not telling anyone and went to enlist into the army. It was hard for him because he never got to say goodbye. While trying to enlist in the army, he was turned down many times due to his age. When he finally got accepted Johnny now faced the duty to fight for the country at only 10 years old.

Johnny Clem is important to us because its anticipated that he changed the attitude about war itself. During the Battles of Chickamauga, Johnny was captured twice. He managed to escape both times killing one enemy in the process.

Johnny sent a nonverbal message to the soldiers to always keep fighting and never give up on what you believe in. He was named "The Rock of Chickamauga." Even though he was small, many soldiers honored Johnny's will to fight and end slavery. So, Johnny is important to American History because he gave the soldiers hope..

Johnny Clem impacted American History by contributing to fight in the war. At age 10 you aren't required to fight in the war, but Johnny risked his life to do so. Because of his patriotism towards his country, John was given names like "Johnny Shiloh" and "The Rock of Chickamauga" to honor his bravery in certain battles.

What fascinates me about Johnny Clem is that he left his own family to serve in the war. Most guys in the war are about 16-30 years old, but to be 10 years old you would have to be committed to what your doing. John loved serving for his country, so he did whatever he could to keep serving. Johnny never gave up, and that's what i admire about him.
