Working together to deliver success for George Best Belfast City Airport

We have seen many changes since George Best Belfast City Airport (GBBCA) opened for business in 1938. But some things never change, and GBBCA’s dedication to their employees and the local community has been, and remains, a constant driver behind the airport's success.

In July 2016, NATS secured the contract to provide air traffic control services at Belfast City – the first of its kind at the airport – and with NATS’ on-going support, GBBCA continues to develop its efficiency as a regional gateway, representing approximately 40% of the scheduled domestic air traffic to and from Northern Ireland.

"There are constant changes taking place in European Regulation and advances in Air Traffic Control technology. NATS continues to thrive on delivering innovation to regional airports whilst maintaining safety."

- Michael Cockcroft, General Manager ATS, Belfast Airports

Working in partnership, NATS promised to deliver and support the Airports goals to develop technical advancements including Electronic Flight Progress Strips (EFPS) and Radar in the Tower, in order to enhance future business.

The Tower team received on-going support and training during the changeover to NATS, ensuring quality operations and expertise, supported with best in class procedures, technologies, analytics, safety and assurance.

"One of our key priorities at NATS is our people. Throughout the Belfast City transition we have focused on the individual; training each employee on how to adjust to culture, recognise stress and how to ensure the wellness of yourself and colleagues.”

- Daryl Heaselgrave, Airport General Manager, NATS

With the ten-year partnership on the horizon, NATS is taking a long-term approach to the project and their employees to ensure maximum efficiencies and retention.

"By outsourcing our air traffic requirements to a globally recognised operator such as NATS, we know we are partnering with the best in class. Safety is paramount in this industry and the reputation of NATS speaks volumes."

- Mark Beattie, Operations Director, George Best Belfast City Airport
