Trench Survival Guide By: Katie Schultz

In WW1, lots of people battled for a long time, but the soldiers also lived in trenches for a while. A trench was a dug up hole that was most of the time six feet wide and 7 feet deep. Lots of bacteria was in the trenches. Also, there were rats and diseases from them. Plus, there is a terrible smell of dead bodies in a closed and tight space. One item that can help the soldiers in a trench is to bring a medical kit. If a soldier gets cut, there are items that can heal it by getting stitches, there are shots to prevent illness, and lots more. Another illness soldiers got was trench foot. This is when somebody has been standing in cold mud and water and get frostbite from it. What soldiers should do is change their shoes and socks so this gets rid of the socks that are freezing. The medical kit would help trench foot heal too.

When WW1 happened, they started using gas bombs and more gases in the air so the other soldiers would die. They didn’t have anything to use to prevent this from getting into their body. Since, there’s going to be poison in the atmosphere, use a gas mask. It would help out a soldier. The mask prevents the chemicals from getting into the soldier’s body so they can live. These would help a soldier live because it won’t get the soldier ill from the poison.

Another item that would help a soldier is tools that help dig trenches. These tools would help a soldier to have a shelter. They allow them a place to sleep and go in while the war is going on. Although there are downfalls to living in a trench, it may have saved a lot of soldiers in World War 1. They dug holes into the ground to make the trenches bigger and faster to get the trench finished.

Furthermore, another item that helps a soldier in WW1 is a machine gun. Machine guns helped the soldiers by attacking the enemy. The were the most powerful gun used in that time. They shoot with force and power and it is a powerful gun.
