If you have a child in Primary you will have probably seen their Christmas production in the last two weeks. There are not many schools that I know that put on 6 productions in a two week period. I have seen all the productions and what impresses me most is the way our students have set themselves a number of challenges that as adults we would find daunting ourselves. Learning lines, not in their own native language and performing to a room of adults is a real accomplishment and one that they, you and I should feel incredibly proud about. What this demonstrates is that our students are prepared to put themselves in situations that may well be uncomfortable with, however, they persevere, showing great resilience. It is our wonderful teachers and learning assistants who have instilled a sense of belief and confidence in our students that enables them to get up on stage and communicate and collaborate in a wonderfully creative spectacular. You as parents must also be thanked for encouraging your child and focusing on the importance of effort and practice. You will notice that our students are regularly reflecting and challenging themselves to get even better with our school’s Core Values. A massive thank you to our truly amazing Primary Team who have over the last two weeks brought many smiles to our faces.
Si tienen hijos en Primaria probablemente habrán visto su actuación en las últimas dos semanas. No conozco muchos colegios que tengan 6 funciones escolares en dos semanas. He visto todas las funciones navideñas y lo que más me ha impresionado es la forma en la que nuestros alumnos se enfrentan a una serie de retos que como adultos encontraríamos abrumadores. Aprenderse cada parte en un idioma que no es el nativo y actuar delante de una sala llena de adultos es realmente un logro del que ellos, nosotros y ustedes deberíamos sentirnos orgullosos. Lo que esto demuestra es que nuestros alumnos están preparados para ponerse en situaciones que podrían hacerle sentirse incómodos al principio pero, si perseveran, demostrarán su capacidad de resiliciencia. Nuestros maravillosos profesores y asistentes han inculcado en nuestros alumnos la confianza y la creencia en sí mismos para subirse a un escenario, colaborar y comunicar de una forma tremendamente creativa y espectacular. También tenemos que darles las gracias a ustedes, los padres, por animar a sus hijos y centrarse en la importancia del esfuerzo y la práctica. Se habrán dado cuenta de que nuestros alumnos reflexionan de forma habitual y se retan a sí mismos para progresar y llevar a cabo los valores del colegio. Gracias enormes a nuestro maravilloso equipo de Primaria, que nos ha sacado una sonrisa permanente en las últimas dos semanas.

Our Core Value Champions (December)
Eight prominent members of the school and local community were asked to become champions of our school last March when we relaunched and rebranded to The British School of Málaga. The champions, with some help from the students, planted eight trees as a symbol of each value in “The Secret Garden” where they will grow alongside the students.
El año pasado, en Marzo, con motivo de nuestra reinauguración y paso a The British School of Málaga 8 destacados miembros de la comunidad educativa y local que se convirtieron en patrones de los valores del colegio. Alumnos y patrones plantaron ocho árboles que simbolizan esos valores en el llamado “Secret Garden”, donde están creciendo al ritmo de los alumnos.
Tilman Mahrenholz
INDEPENDENCE
My name is Tilman Mahrenholz and I am a member of the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra consists of three sections of instruments, wind, string and percussion. Each section has a soloist, who is the musician responsible for that section and who plays all the solo interludes. I am the soloist in the cello section of the orchestra. The orchestra structures its activity in seasons, we start in September and we finish in June, throughout this time offering 15 concerts a year. Apart from these concerts there are opera productions at the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga, educational concerts for children, recordings, summer concerts and one-off performances etc. On an individual level, I practice daily to maintain my level of expertise. I also have to practice the scores of the work which will be performed by the orchestra. In addition to being an orchestral musician, I also act as a chamber musician, being part of smaller groups of musicians and also teach individual cello classes.
Mi nombre es Tilman Mahrenholz y trabajo como miembro de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga, que es una orquesta sinfónica grande. Se compone de tres secciones de instrumentos, los de viento, los de cuerda y los de percusión. Cada sección tiene un instrumentista llamado solista, que es el músico que se responsabiliza del funcionamiento de esa sección y también, cuando la partitura así lo requiere, toca los solos que son pasajes en los que la sección calla e interviene únicamente el solista. Esa función la tengo yo, soy el solista de la sección de violonchelos de la OFM. La OFM estructura su actividad en temporadas, es decir comenzamos en septiembre y finalizamos en junio, ofreciendo a lo largo de este tiempo conciertos de temporada de abono, que son 15 conciertos al año. Aparte de estos conciertos hay producciones de ópera en el Teatro Cervantes de Málaga, conciertos didácticos para niños, grabaciones, conciertos de verano, conciertos extraordinarios, etc. A nivel individual, practico con mi instrumento a diario. Dentro de este estudio incluyo práctica de mantenimiento, similar a la de un deportista y preparación individual de las partituras de las obras que interpreta la orquesta, mayoritariamente. Además de ser músico de orquesta, también actúo como músico de cámara, formando parte de grupos de músicos más pequeños y también imparto clases individuales de mi instrumento.
Certificates Evening
Celebrating Success
On Friday 13th December our Year 12 students celebrated their 2019 IGCSE success at our Certificate Evening at Hacienda Nadales. The event was led by Mr Jason Williams, Head of Sixth Form and our Head Students. Our Year 13 Head Students, Maribel and Rocio, gave a very passionate speeches. Maribel demonstrated how aspirational she is and the importance of aiming high and never just settling with second best. Our new Year 12 Head Students, Erik S, Harald S, Jorge C. and Leen B spoke for the first since they have been appointed and they did this with real eloquence. We also had the pleasure of hearing from Erik S who played Beatrice by Sam Riverson the piano and Leen B who performed Ocean of Hope by Bo Young Kwon, also on the piano. Both performances were outstanding and again demonstrates that the impossible can be possible.
El Viernes 13 de Diciembre nuestros alumnos de Year 12 celebraron sus éxitos en los exámenes de IGCSE 2019 durante la ceremonia de Entrega de Certificados en Hacienda Nadales. El evento fue dirigido por Mr Jason Williams, Coordinador del Sixth Form y nuestros Head Students. Las alumnas Head Students de Year 13 Maribel y Rocío dieron discursos muy apasionados. Maribel supo transmitir todas las aspiraciones que alberga y la importancia de tener ambiciones y nunca conformarse con el segundo puesto. Nuestros alumnos de Year 12 Erik S., Harald S., Jorge C. y Lee B. hablaron por primera vez desde que fueron nombrados y lo hicieron con gran elocuencia. También tuvimos el placer de escuchar la interpretación musical de Erik S., quien tocó el tema Beatrice de Sam Riverson al piano, así como de Leen B. que tocó también al piano la canción Ocean of Hope de Bo Young Kwon. Ambas actuaciones fueron extraordinarias y demuestran que lo imposible puede ser posible.

Food Drive · Recogida de Alimentos
We have had a fantastic response to our annual Food Drive for the Fundación Escuela de Solidaridad organised by the secondary students. Students have been collecting non perishable food items and hygiene and cleaning products which they have today donated to the Foundation. The Foundation takes in people who are living in difficult circumstances and for one reason or another are not able to stay in their own home. These may be people suffering from abuse, who have been thrown out of their home, mothers with young children in an emergency situation, young adults at risk etc..
Hemos tenido una fantástica respuesta a nuestra Recogida Anual de Alimentos para la Fundación Escuela de Solidaridad, organizada por los alumnos de Secundaria. Los alumnos han recogido alimentos no perecedero y de higiene y limpieza. Hoy los han donado a la ONG. Escuela de Solidaridad acoge a personas que atraviesan circunstancias difíciles y que, por un motivo u otro, no pueden estar en sus propias casas. Pueden ser personas que han sufrido abusos, expulsadas, madres con niños pequeños en situación de emergencia, jóvenes en riesgo, etc.

A Christmas Carol
Year 9 have been studying A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Some students worked very hard to recreate these scenes from the novel showing amazing creativity, including one scene with a working light!
Los alumnos de Year 9 han estado estudiando la obra A Christmas Carol, de Charles Dickens. Algunos de ellos se han empleado a fondo y han recreado escenas de la novela, con lo que nos han mostrado su increíble creatividad. ¡Una de las escenas cuenta incluso con una bombilla en pleno funcionamiento!
Primary Assembly
Today saw the last Primary assembly of the year when they took the opportunity to announce the number of house points won during the first term (Water is currently in the lead) , they distributed certificates and thanked the kitchen staff for all their hard work. Finally, look at the surprise the teachers had hidden from the students...... what do you think of their performance?
La última asamblea de Primaria del año sirvió para hacer el recuento de puntos de las casas (Agua ha salido ganadora durante el Primer Trimestre), la entrega de certificados, un caluroso agradecimiento por su trabajo al equipo de Cocina y... ¡una sorpresita que todos los profesores tenían guardada a los alumnos! ¿Qué os parece su actuación?

Ski Trip for Years 11, 12 & 13 · Viaje a la nieve para Year 11, Year 12 y Year 13
As part of the A Level Travel and Tourism course, students are required to organise an event that will represent 25% of their final examination. One of the groups led by Alvaro S is organising a ski trip to the Sierra Nevada for Years 11, 12 and 13 students. The trip will run from the 10th to 12th February 2020, will be supervised by staff at all times and all communication regarding the trip will be sent via the school office.
Parte del trabajo de los alumnos de la asignatura de A Level de Turismo es organizar un evento, lo que supone un 25% de la nota final. Uno de los grupos de alumnos, encabezado por Álvaro S., está organizando un viaje de esquí a Sierra Nevada dirigido a todos los alumnos de Year 11, Year 12 y Year 13. El viaje tendrá lugar entre el 10 y el 12 de Febrero de 2020 y estará supervisado por profesores de forma permanente. Todas las circulares referentes a este viaje saldrán oficialmente del colegio.

ISP International Programmes (Summer)
Claremont (UK) Summer Camp · Campamento en Claremont (Reino Unido)
Claremont Summer School will take place between 13th July - 23rd August 2020 and will consist of three blocks of two-week courses. Students can choose to enrol for two weeks, four weeks or all six weeks, and will study accredited English language courses, experience a wide range or cultural trips and activities and have the opportunity to specialise in STEM, Performing Arts and Sport. El campamento de verano del colegio ISP Claremont tendrá lugar entre el 13 de Julio y el 23 de Agosto y consta de tres bloques de 2 semanas. Story Time at The British School of Málaga · Cuentacuentos en The British School of Málaga
This year we have launched a new initiative that we are really excited about. Our assistant Jo Woods is busy recording and editing a series of stories which are going to be told by our teachers and members of staff, in native English and with all the charm of a traditional storytelling. So when the children are going to bed, travelling in the car, or they simply want to enjoy a good story, you will be able to play the video or listen to the audio once, twice, or as many times as they want.
Este año hemos inaugurado una nueva iniciativa que nos hace especial ilusión. Nuestra assistant Jo Woods se está encargando de grabar en vídeo y de editar una serie de cuentos relatados por nuestros profesores y miembros de la plantilla, en inglés nativo y con todo el encanto de los cuentacuentos. Así, cuando los niños se vayan a acostar, viajen en coche o quieran simplemente disfrutar de una buena historia, podrán reproducirla en vídeo o en audio una... o tantas veces como deseen.
A Magical Christmas
A Christmas Story by Ghala (Year 11)
It was a cold and snowy Christmas Eve. The little girl stayed up all night like a bat in the dark waiting for Santa Claus. The gigantic Christmas tree in her room gleamed between the shadows of the night. As the little girl started to drift off to sleep, she noticed that the stocking that was hung on her bedroom door started to move.
“Stupid present why won’t you fit?” She heard a squeaky voice coming from the same place say. The little girl got up slowly to figure out what was in the stocking. More rumbling and squeaking came from the red and white sock shaped bag. The red-headed girl clasped the top of the stocking close so whatever was inside wouldn’t escape.
“W-what? Let me out! Let me out!” When the girl peaked inside, she found a tiny elf. They both screamed at the top of their lungs and fell to the floor as the girl let go of the stocking. The elf peeked out slowly. “What’s your name?” Asked the elf. “
“Emily.” The red head replied. Emily approached the shy elf slowly and picked him up with both hands. “What’s your name little elf?” She said, stroking his tiny head gently. “Reuben from the North Pole! Where it’s always snowy and bright!” He said while his eyes filled with excitement.
Emily and Reuben kept talking for a little while until they were interrupted by a rumbling noise coming from the living room downstairs. Emily’s eyes widened and she let out a gasp. “It’s Santa!” Yelled Emily. She picked up Reuben and they hurried downstairs. “Reuben? Reuben? What’s taking you so long?” whispered a deep voice.
Emily stood there in shock not believing what was standing right before her eyes. “Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas Eve Emily!” It was in fact, Santa Claus. Emily ran up to Santa and gave him a tight hug. “Santa, have I been good this year?” Santa let out a jolly laugh “ of course you have Emily. In fact, you’re on the top of my nice list.” Emily raised her head up high in pride and placed Rueben on Santa’s shoulder.
Santa carefully opened his red sack and took out three large presents from them. “These are the presents you asked for Emily, and an extra one for being a good girl this year.” He then took off his fluffy red and white hat and placed it on Emily’s head. Santa grabbed his sack and just as he was about to climb up the chimney, Emily yelled out “Santa, Rueben, wait!” Santa and Rueben turned around with confused looks on their faces.
Emily ran to the kitchen as fast as he little legs could go, and came back with a plate full of chocolate chip cookies and a bag filled with carrots. “The cookies are for you and the elves and the carrots are for the reindeer.” Emily handed Santa the food and stepped back to watch them climb up the chimney.
“It was lovely to meet you Emily, I’ll see you again next year!” Squeaked Reuben, and with that she watched them climb up the chimney as she headed back to her room. Once she went back to bed, she heard the faint footsteps of the eight reindeer.
“Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas!” Emily could hear Santa’s voice drift off into the night as the sleigh took off from the rooftop. “Merry Christmas Santa.” Emily whispered and then drifted off to sleep.
