The Lost Ring By: marissa costello

It was the day after Christmas, All of Natalie's family woke up and she was gone. She was very nice and always happy. No one could find her anywhere in town. Her family and friends couldn’t find her anywhere. They tried calling her, there was no answer. They yelled her name, there was no response. Everyone was worried.

I was scared, I didn’t know where I was, I was brought here when I was sleeping, but I don’t know why. I closed my eyes, to see if it was a dream. As soon as I closed my eyes I heard a loud bang and one big scream. I was both worried and scared. I wanted to go home, but I didn’t know how. In my head there where so many thoughts, Where am I? How do I leave? Will I ever be able to leave?

I walked up some stairs, to find the person that screamed, maybe they know why I am here. I saw a shadow run back and forth, I saw dust spiders all over. What do I do? I thought to myself. All I want to do is go home and play with my new toys and be in my house and safe with my family. I screamed, a man walked up to me and grabbed my hand. “Come,” he said. I was nervous, do I go with? Do I run away? I went with, to see if he could help me get out of here.

He brought me to a room, a dark and scary one, it had spider webs everywhere. He said to me, “I know why you were brought here,” I asked him why. He said to sit down and then he told a story.

“You’re younger sister passed away 2 years ago, right?”

“Yes, how do you know about this," I said in shock.

“She was brought here as well, she didn’t follow her task that she was given, and that’s not acceptable. You were brought here to be given a very important task, if you do not complete the task you will die. Your task is to find a diamond ring somewhere in this house. The ring has been missing for eighteen years. It was the wedding ring of the woman that used to live here. You will have one week.”

I was scared. If this is where my sister went, what if the same thing happens to me? Is this how i’m going to die? As soon as the man was done talking, I ran. I tried to find the diamond ring. I’m never going to find that diamond ring, I thought to myself. I kept doubting myself, I cried. Then, I saw my sister walking up to me. She said to me, “It’s not time for you to die, everyone at home is worried, I believe in you, you can do this.” When she told me this I knew I could do it.

I looked everywhere, even in the most gross places. I knew I would find it somewhere. It got so late, but I had nowhere to sleep. I found a dusty old blanket and a little chair, and I slept on it. When I woke up, I was full of dust. I was a huge mess and I had no other clothes and nowhere to bathe. I just tried to ignore it and I kept working on trying to find the ring.

It had been four days and I still hadn’t found it. I only had 3 days left and I had found nothing. Then I heard something - a loud bang. Something must’ve fallen, and I went to see what it was. There was glass shattered everywhere, but there was no one around. I started to get scared. Then I saw a shadow, not just any shadow, it was huge. I turned around, and there was a very tall man, I was starting to get creeped out about this man. Why did people keep appearing places?

This man wasn’t alone, he had the diamond ring! I tried to grab it from him, but he wouldn’t let me. At first I thought he was just tricking me but he wasn’t. He started running off. I chased him because I needed that ring. He was running so fast, up and down stairs and down long, dark hallways. I finally got him to stop running, by tripping him. He dropped the ring. We were both glancing at every little spot, hoping to be the one to find it.

I finally found it. The scary man just disappeared. I ran to give it to the man that gave me the task. I couldn’t find him. I figured I would just go to sleep. I hid the diamond ring in a very small hole, so that no one would find it.

I woke up and spent another whole day looking for the man, but there was no luck. I have two days left to find this man and I don’t even know what his name is.

It was my last day to try and find the man, and I was scared. I didn’t think I was going to be able to find him, I didn’t think I would finish my task. Then, there the man was, standing right in front of me. I gave him the ring. He said, “thank you,” then he disappeared.

He never helped me get out of here, I didn’t know where he went, or where I find him. As all of these thoughts were spinning in my head I thought to myself, I am going to get out of this place and make my sister proud!

I was looking for two 2 things: a door to get out and the man so he can help me. I really just wanted to leave, I want to eat something and play games with all of my family and friends. I have been in this dark place for seven days, and I haven't eaten anything.

After 9 hours of searching I finally found the man, in a room just sitting there, I asked him for help. He told me I could leave because I finished my task, so he helped me find the door. The door opened to a dark room with a bed in it. He told me all I had to do was fall asleep and I would be brought back home.

I woke back up at home, everybody was so happy to see me. For the rest of the day we ate food, played games, talked, and we slept. I was so happy to be back home, but I would never forget what happened.
