Experience Matters Why We'RE BuilDING Adobe XD

Our motivation

Experience matters. It’s a term we coined back in the early days at Macromedia and has always held true throughout my career at Adobe. We believe that great experiences build great businesses. It’s what drives us to provide designers with the best tools, the best solutions to bring those experiences to life. Great experiences are hard to quantify, but we all know when we are having them. And today, the bar has never been higher in terms of what we all expect from our mobile and web experiences.

The shelf life of a poorly designed app or web experience is usually painful, short, and very public – it could make or break a company.

With the explosion of content and proliferation of apps, the battle for our attention is fierce. The shelf life of a poorly designed app or web experience is usually painful, short, and very public – it could make or break a company. Think of your own experience. How many of us have downloaded an app or visited a web site, have been confused or frustrated by a sign-on experience or interface...and never gone back?

The stakes are high which makes the work very rewarding but also puts loads of pressure on the shoulders of the creative teams, and explains why user experience (UX) design is one of the fastest growing creative disciplines. According to Behance, our online creative community, interaction design projects grew 52% in 2015, more than any other creative field.

The ability to quickly design, prototype and share your projects with stakeholders and developers is essential to the modern UX design process. Previously, designers have been forced to cobble together multiple tools and services to make this happen.

We believe there is a better way.

Adobe Experience Design CC (Preview)

Design at the speed of thought

Today, we're excited to introduce Adobe Experience Design CC (Preview). Adobe XD is an early release of our much-anticipated UX design and prototyping solution for the design community to deliver mobile apps and web sites. Initially demo’ed as “Project Comet” at Adobe MAX in October 2015, we are releasing this Preview to invite the full design community to join the thousands of existing pre-release customers to share their feedback, ensuring that designers give critical input into the evolving product features. Adobe XD is available as a free download with an Adobe ID and we expect the first commercial release to be available for Adobe Creative Cloud members later this year.

Adobe XD is a passion project for myself and the amazing team working on it. Opportunities to re-invent a space don’t come along too often and we’ve assembled some of the best craftspeople on the planet to bring this to life. Great attention to detail has been applied to all aspects of the product and although this is just a preview you’ll find that it is ready for production work even now. Some things to look out for:

All in one

Adobe XD is the only solution that allows you to design, prototype and share within one system. Need to make a quick change to your design? See it flow through to your prototype in real time. No more going back and forth between multiple systems with multiple versions of your design files and assets.

Speed

Adobe XD is lightning-fast, with smooth scrolling, panning and zooming of complex projects and graphic-rich art boards, despite the large file sizes involved. Every feature, every decision is vetted for it’s impact on performance ensuring the very best experience for our customers.

Innovation

We are building Adobe XD from the ground up in collaboration with the design community. They’ve been working with us on great features such as “Repeat Grid,” which makes designing repeated items in lists and grids – an essential pattern in mobile and web designs – less tedious and almost instantaneous.

Connected Creativity

Designers can easily bring in existing assets from Creative Cloud like Adobe Illustrator CC and Adobe Photoshop CC. One click sharing allows designers to share prototypes with any stakeholder on any device. Once designs are finalized, assets can be easily exported to developers for production work. And, we’re just at the beginning. Richer collaboration features along with deeper integration with Creative Cloud Libraries and Adobe Stock are all on the roadmap.

We're just getting started

This first public Preview, initially available on Mac OS, is just the beginning. We are planning regular monthly updates for Adobe XD, adding support for multiple devices, with a Windows preview expected in the Fall.

The art and science of designing compelling mobile apps and web experiences has never been more important, and experience-led designs are putting more demands than ever on creative teams. We hope this Preview release – which is ready for production work now – helps make the UX designer’s job easier and the experiences they create, richer. From the beginning this has been a constructive collaboration between our team and the design community and we look forward to our continued work together on Adobe XD with designers worldwide.
