Adventures in STEAM August 2018

Welcome to the monthly STEAM newsletter. At the end of each month I will be sending out a newsletter to let you know what we have been doing during STEAM class for the month.

My name is Elana Waugh, and I will be your child's STEAM teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. Although this is my first year teaching with Haslett Public Schools, this will be my 22nd year of teaching. I have a BA from Albion College in Art and Elementary Education, and a MA from Eastern Michigan University in Curriculum Development. I have been married for 14 years to my husband John. We have three kids (12, 10, and 8) who keep us very busy. I enjoy reading, writing, running, and being outside. I love to create things that seem impossible and find joy in a child's imagination. I am so excited for my new position as this is a dream job for me.

The students will visit STEAM class once every eight to nine days depending on their rotation. During their time with me throughout the year, the students will be exposed to the components of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). They will learn how to work together using the engineering design process model (ask, imagine, plan, create, improve). Activities will be designed around the students' interests and inquiry will play a big part. I am really excited to watch the students grow as individuals and as a team.

We are bucket fillers! During each STEAM class students will earn hearts for showing kindness towards one another and me. Once students earn ten hearts, the class will be given ten minutes of structured tinker time. Tinker time is an opportunity for students to play and create using Legos, zoobs, dominoes, etc. I can't wait to see their kindness blossom!
