Alternatives to PowerPoint Maggie Davis

Powtoon

PowToon is a online alternative to PowerPoint. It is colorful and engaging, and is perfect for students who want to create animated videos without coding.

Users may start their videos from scratch or choose from the many templates available. PowToon is user friendly, but may be difficult for some who are new to creating videos. There is a free version available, however, users are limited to videos no longer than 5 minutes.

There are significant limitations to using PowToon. The free version does not allow the user to download his/her video. Also, users are not able to collaborate with one another. The user's work is not saved automatically, and certain templates, characters, etc. are not available on the free version as well. There are paid subscription options available, but they are relatively expensive.

Powtoon is colorful and engaging!

SlideRocket

SlideRocket is an online alternative to PowerPoint. Presentations are extremely professional and are able to be accessed anywhere including online, mobile, or offline. SlideRocket integrates FlickR and YouTube and can also import from Google or PowerPoint. Users may collaborate with one another as well.

Unfortunately, SlideRocket is no longer free to users. A subscription service is typically offered, but as of right now, no new accounts are being accepted. SlideRocket has been purchased by ClearSlide; the company is in the process of revamping the product. When it is complete, new subscriptions will be available.

Microsoft Sway

Sway is a free, online application offered through Microsoft. It has a very intuitive interface, and users will find it simple to use. Users may import pdf files and PowerPoints as well as add tweets, text, images and videos. Finding online content is very easy; Sway will find relevant content for the user based on the text that has been added. Users may also collaborate with one another and share Sways easily.

Sway is free!

Sway is designed more for the "on the go" viewer, and not for teachers or presenters to use in a large group setting. Font size cannot be changed; unless the viewer is in the front of the classroom, the text will be difficult to see.

ThingLink

ThingLinks provides users with a way to make their images and videos come to life. Users tag photos with text, music and/or videos. ThingLinks allow users to be creative as well as the ability to post their creations to various social media platforms. View the example below to learn more about what ThingLink has to offer.

Emaze

Emaze is a online presentation tool which allows users to create exciting and engaging presentations. Users can create from scratch, or they can import a PowerPoint into the platform. There are numerous templates to choose from, and it is as easy as clicking a button. Emaze takes a simple PowerPoint presentation and converts it into something "EMAZING"!

Emaze offers a free version!

The free version of Emaze does not allow the user to download the presentation or export it as a video file. To collaborate with others, users will have to upgrade their account to the Pro or Business version. There is a 14 day free trial if the user opts to explore the benefits of a paid version of Emaze.

Emaze's free version is worth looking into, as it does offer some interesting and engaging templates.

Adobe Spark

Adobe Spark is a tool that allows users to create web stories, videos, and presentations. It has a very simple and extremely intuitive interface, and projects can be shared via email or social media. Users can download the apps on a mobile device thus allowing projects to be synced across all devices.

There are many fonts, themes, pictures, and templates to choose from, and users have the ability to upload photos from a device or from the cloud as well. Best of all, Adobe Spark is free!
