THE WEEK AHEAD
In phonics this week, the children will be focusing on the next sounds in phase 2- i, n, m, d. As we look at the first few sounds, we will learn the phoneme and grapheme for each letter, and begin to learn how to blend these sounds to make simple words such as ‘s-a-t’ and ‘a-t’. We will be starting to read and write short words such as ‘is, it, pan and mat’. Why not have a go at making your own words up at home using these sounds? Can you spot any of these sounds and letters in your story books at home?
Please login to our Purple Mash blog to find resources to support this phonic learning at home.
In Maths, we will be using the Numicon pieces and putting these in order from smallest to largest. We will use our sense of touch to feel for a number, in order to complete a numicon jigsaw. We will begin to learn how numbers can be represented in different way e.g. numicon piece, cubes, tens frame. We will play the odd one out game – where we have to find the odd one out and discuss why?

As part of our Pirate theme, we will learn all about magnets. We will look at different types of magnets and children will be introduced to key vocabulary – magnet, repel, attract, metal, magnetism. Pupils will get a chance to explore the force of magnets in our investigation area and will be encouraged to use the magnets to find and sort the materials that are magnetic.
On Friday 8 October, we will be having a Reception Pirate Day! On this day pupils may come to school dressed as a pirate. We will kick start the day by finding a message in a bottle from a pirate who needs our help! We will use our creative skills to design and make pirate boats. Children will practise their cutting skills and make a pirate hat, which they will then wear to go on a hunt around school. Pupils will have to follow a simple map around school to find the hidden treasure! In the afternoon, as part of our PE session, pupils will play a variety of pirate games, which will continue to develop their spatial awareness e.g. Sharks!
Our Jigsaw theme this week is Gentle Hands. We will first discuss all the amazing things we can do with our hands. Then we will explore how our hands can sometimes be - bad hands or good hands! We will share the story – Hands are not for Hitting, and reflect on how we can use words to solve problems not using our hands.
Don’t forget, reading bags should be brought to school every day. Please remember to sign your child’s reading record book each time they read at home. If pupils have read 5 times then they receive 3 reward points and their name is entered into our reading raffle. Library books should be returned on Friday for changing.
Have a lovely week.
The Reception Team
What is Numicon?
Last week, your child brought home (in their reading bag) a set of Numicon pieces. Numicon is an approach to teaching maths that helps your child to see connections between numbers. It supports your child as they learn early maths skills in Reception and KS 1. Numicon is a multi-sensory way of learning, and children learn by seeing and feeling. The holes in the Numicon Shapes represent the numbers 1 to 10. When arranged in order, as in the picture below, children can easily see connections between numbers, such as “one more” or “one less”.
Over the coming year this is a key resource used within our number sessions. As we progress with our mathematical learning we will post suggested activities on our Purple Mash blog, which you may use to support this learning at home.
Mrs Joyce is our whole school Maths Lead, if you would like any more information about Numicon or how we teach maths in EYFS, please contact school.

Please see below a copy of our school lunch menu. This week (week commencing 04.10.21) will be Menu 4.
Please note menus are subject to change. A file is kept onsite of all ingredients used in the production of our food. This is to comply with the regulations regarding allergens. If your child has an allergy and you would like to see this file, please contact the main office.
Reception Parental Drop-In Sessions
This week, there will be another drop-in session on Wednesday 6 October 2021, 3.15-3.45pm. This session is held straight after school and is very informal. The Reception staff are available should you wish to come and say hello, have a chat about your child or just look around the classroom.
Show and Tell
Starting next week, Monday 11 October, we will be holding a ‘show and tell’ session for the children as part of our key worker time. Children are encouraged to stand at the front of their group and talk about something that is special to them, such as any certificates that they have received, places that they have visited or special times within their family. We love to hear about the children’s experiences and special moments outside of school and would love to share these with the children. If your child has anything that they would like to show and tell please send these in every Monday. Any certificate and awards will be kept safe ready to share with the whole school during our Friday Celebration assembly and then returned home.
