Cabra Matters Term 3 Week 6 2018

Principal's Report

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

We are holding our Term 3 interviews to discuss your child’s learning progress next week. Thank you to the many parents and carers who have made an appointment to meet with the teachers. If you have not made an appointment, I encourage you to do so. This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about your child’s successes and areas for improvement.

I would like to congratulate the following Year 6 students for their success in gaining a position at an academically selective high school next year.

Fort St HS – Jamie 5/6N

Bonnyrigg HS – Diem 5/6N, Angus 5/6N, Amelea 5/6N, Awatea 5/6N, Ricky 5/6N

Prairiewood HS – Jessica 5/6N, Justin 5/6N, Benjamin 5/6N, Ricky 5/6N

We have a very colourful and attractive uniform which most of our children wear with pride. Unfortunately, there are some children who do not wear the full, correct uniform. We want all children to wear the correct uniform so that they and the school look good.

The areas of the uniform which are not being correctly worn by some children are:

SHOES – Black shoes are expected to be worn every day except Sports Day which is Friday for Years 3-6 students and Thursdays for K-2 students.

GILRS’ TIGHTS – During the colder months, girls are expected to wear black tights. At the moment, some girls are wearing colourful tights which take away from the look of the uniform.

UNDERCLOTHING – During the colder months, students need to be warm. Instead of wearing colourful under garments, we expect that students will wear the correct school jacket or jumper. Yellow skivvies or under shirts are acceptable.

HATS – There has been an improvement in the number of students wearing the correct school hat. Did you know that skin can burn after 15 minutes exposure to the sun? Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Hats should be worn to and from school and during recess and lunch. If students do not have a hat, they must remain under the COLAs.

Our children need your support to make sure that they wear the correct uniform to show your care for, and pride in, our school.

A special Parents and Carers Only excursion has been organised for Friday September 14. I will lead the group on a tour of the historic part of Sydney called The Rocks. The tour will include information about the original Aboriginal people who lived in the area and the establishment of the town of Sydney by the British government. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased at the School Office. You will need to bring your own food and drinks for a picnic lunch. Pre School children are welcome, but will need strollers as there will be a lot of walking. This is a great opportunity to visit the same places that our students visit as part of their studies of History and Geography and to meet other parents and carers. We only have 11 seats left for this exciting trip. The bus will leave at 9.30 am following the K-2 assembly.

Many of our students and teachers are working very hard to prepare for our annual musical production called ‘STARSTRUCK’. I am certain that this production will meet and exceed the extremely high standard of performance set by the school in previous years. The performances will be held on:

Tuesday September 25 at 11.30 am

Wednesday September 26 at 11.30 am and 6.30 pm

Thursday September 27 at 11.30 am and 6.30 pm

Your child will have received an invitation outlining the process for buying tickets which are $5 for children and $10 for adults. I hope that you can join us for a celebration of music, acting, dancing and costuming which maintains a long tradition of performance excellence at Cabramatta.

Kindest regards,

Glen Stelzer.

Gifted and Talented Mathematics Competition

On Wednesday, 22nd August, 16 students represented Cabramatta Public School at the Gifted and Talented Mathematics Competition, held at Bonnyrigg Public School. Our school entered four teams in the competition and they all performed admirably. Team One and Team Two came second and third respectively, with Prairevale Public School coming first on the day and progressing to the final, to be held during Term Four.

Cabramatta Team One was leading the competition all day until the Tower Challenge, where Prairevale took the lead after fortunately having completed exactly the same task at their school last year.

I would like to congratulate all of our students on their wonderful representation of Cabramatta Public School. The next upcoming Mathematics Competition will be the Maths Cup, held at Amity College on Thursday, 6th September.

Season 2 PSSA Wrap Up

Season 2 PSSA

Over Term 2 and 3, students represented Cabramatta Public School in oztag, rugby league, basketball and cricket. Congratulations to the junior cricket team who made it to the semi-finals. They played their best on the day but were unfortunately knocked out by Canley Vale Public school. The oztag and rugby league teams progressed through to the grand finals but due to wet weather, the finals were not played. Congratulations to the rugby league team who are joint premiers with Lansvale Public School. Another congratulations to the oztag team who are joint premiers with Yennora Public School.

Trials will be commencing this week for Season 3 PSSA. Mrs King will be taking the AFL team, Miss Sawaya will take the soft ball team and Miss Vazquez will take the tee-ball team. Keep an eye out on the sport noticeboard for more information regarding PSSA. Good luck to all students trying out. We hope to have another great season of sport!

Book Week Parade

This year the Children's Book Council of Australia's Book Week theme was" find your treasure".

So many costume ideas from new and past books. However, the most popular idea chosen by many (probably due to this year's theme) was the pirate! We had so many different pirates that it was hard to choose a favourite. We had the classic swashbuckling pirate, a modern pirate like Jack Sparrow, a glamourous pirate, and even a nasty grunge style pirate. We missed seeing colourful pirates' parrots, octopus and mermaids! We did however, see ubiquitous pirate accessories, such as eye patches, swords and earrings aplenty. Wonder what the theme will be in 2019. Can't wait to find out
