Type of virus

Chickenpox is a result of a primary infection with VZV or Varicella zoster virus. It is a DNA virus and is a member of the herpesvirus group

The Host

Chickenpox is a human only virus and will not spread to animals. According to research the virus is never completely wiped from the host system. With chickenpox coming first and at a later age, shingles


Chickenpox can be transmitted in many ways. It can be airborne by coughing or sneezing on or near someone. You can get chickenpox be coming in contact with blisters or clothing of an infected person

Infectious period

The infectious period for chickenpox is around 16 to 21 days it starts with a fever, headache, sore throat, or stomach ache.


There are two "classes" of symptoms for the chickenpox. The first occurs on the skin with blisters, red spots, or scabs. The second is the body which consists of fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, etc. The victim may also experience headaches, sore throats, itching etc.


There are a few ways to treat the chickenpox. For self care you can take an oatmeal bath to help soothe the skin or use a moisturizer to help calm irritated skin. There is medicine to help relieve the pain and stop the reproduction.


There are a few ways to prevent getting chickenpox one of which being to get a vaccination. Vaccinations have helped people stay save and if a vaccinated person is infectious it is usually mild.


Chickenpox was way more serious in the 1990's then it is now. In the early 1990's more than 4 million people were infected with chickenpox. Over 10,000 people were put in the hospital and around 100-150 died each year.

There are many theories on how chickenpox got it's name. One goes when the Englishman Dr. Richard Morton misdiagnosed the chickenpox as a mild form of smallpox it was called chickenpox because it was weaker and more "cowardice" like chickens.

In the early 20th century mothers would expose their children to chicken pox to get it over with, these were called chickenpox parties... how fun.
