17: QB1 (2016-18)

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Daniel Jones started 36 games at quarterback for the Blue Devils, completing 764-of-1,275 (.599) passes for 8,201 yards with 52 TDs. In addition, he rushed for 1,323 yards and 17 TDs en route to compiling 9,524 yards of total offense.

On April 25, 2019, Jones was the No. 6 overall selection in the NFL Draft, taken by the New York Giants.

Jones joined the Duke program in July, 2015, but did not see game action that season.
An August injury to returning starter Thomas Sirk thrust Jones into the QB1 slot. On September 3, 2016, Jones made the first start of his career in a 49-6 win over N.C. Central. Against the Eagles, he completed 10-of-15 (.667) passes for 189 yards and two TDs to post the fifth highest single-game mark for passing efficiency (216.51).
As a redshirt freshman in 2016, Jones earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors a school-record four times in games versus Notre Dame (Sept. 24), Georgia Tech (Oct. 29), North Carolina (Nov. 10) & Miami (Nov. 26). He went on to finish runner-up in the balloting for ACC Rookie of the Year.
On September 24, 2016, Jones led the Blue Devils to a 38-35 win over Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., by completing 24-of-32 (.750) pass attempts for 290 yards and three TDs. With the score tied, 35-35, Jones engineered Duke's game-winning, 10-play, 44-yard scoring drive that resulted in AJ Reed's 19-yard field goal with 1:24 remaining in the game.
On November 10, 2016, Duke upended No. 15 North Carolina, 28-27, as Jones threw for 240 yards and one TD while rushing for 94 yards and two scores. With 2:10 left in the third period, Jones tossed a two-yard scoring strike to TE Davis Koppenhaver to give the Blue Devils the lead for good.
On September 9, 2017, Jones became just the second player in Duke history to register 300+ passing and 100+ rushing yards in a single game in the Blue Devils' 41-17 triumph over Northwestern. In the victory over the Wildcats, Jones threw for 305 yards and two TDs while rushing for 108 yards and two additional scores.
With Duke needing a pair of wins in the final two weeks of the regular season to reach bowl eligibility, Jones guided the Blue Devils to back-to-back victories over Georgia Tech (43-20; Nov. 18) and Wake Forest (31-23; Nov. 25).
On December 26, 2017, Duke defeated Northern Illinois, 36-14, in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit, Mich. Jones was named the game's MVP after accounting for 338 total offensive yards and three TDs.
Adversity struck Jones in 2018 when, on September 8, he suffered a fractured clavicle in Duke's win at Northwestern. With the help of teammates Clark Bulleit & Kevin Gehsmann, who designed protective padding that Jones wore under his shoulder pads, the QB returned to the field on September 29 versus Virginia Tech.
Jones directed Duke to its first road win over Miami since 1976, overcoming inclement weather and the Hurricanes in a 20-12 triumph on November 3.
Jones garnered ACC Player of the Week accolades twice in 2018 following wins over Northwestern (21-7; Sept. 8) & North Carolina (42-35; Nov. 10).
On November 10, 2018, Jones enjoyed a record-setting afternoon during Duke's 42-35 win over North Carolina. He established the school single-game record for total offense by throwing for 361 yards and rushing for 186 yards.
With an Offensive Player of the Game performance that included 423 passing yards and six total TDs, Jones led the Blue Devils to a 56-27 win over Temple in the Walk-On's Independence Bowl on December 27, 2018.
Jones served as a team captain in both 2017 & 2018.
Jones forged a special relationship with Duke head coach David Cutcliffe (and Karen).
As Duke's three-year starting quarterback and two-year team captain, Jones was a prominent face of the program. He represented himself, his family, the team, athletic department, university and Durham community in exemplary fashion.
After deciding to forgo his final season of eligibility, Jones earned MVP honors at the Reese's Senior Bowl on January 26, represented Duke at the annual NFL Combine in February and was the No. 6 overall pick in the NFL Draft on April 25.
