Dialogue When a Character in the Story is Talking

1. Begin and end with quotation marks: "Let's go to the park," said my mom.

2.Use a word like said and a name. This part of a piece of dialogue is called a tag: "We can feed the ducks!" my sister shouted.

3. Put a period at the very end: "Ok, let's go!" my mom answered. OR My mom answered, "Ok, let's go!".

4. Use a capital letter after the first quotation mark: Then my mom said, "You can even play on the swings".

5. Place a question mark or an exclamation point inside the quotation marks when it is part of the quotation: "When will we be back?" Ray asked.
