Jody never thought she’d be a dog owner. This all changed when her daughter Maddie moved back home from college with her pit bull mix Brixley. When Maddie left home again to study abroad, Jody found herself in the position of Brixley’s fulltime caretaker. “I, in 53 years, never had a dog, and then my daughter got one. Now my daughter is away and now she’s kind of my dog, and she’s adorable. I just love the little nugget.” What Jody didn’t know was that Article II, Section 13 of her neighborhood covenant bans pit bulls, as well as any breed of dog that “may be perceived by members of the general public as being dangerous or having the propensity for being dangerous.” This is a rule many are unaware of, just as Jody was at the time, until she received a letter in the mail from her neighborhood home owner’s association.
