Last month the Maya children came to Mumbai for a 3 day retreat. We were once more a loving, cozy and united family, only this time we were camped out in my living room :
Over these three days our children operated with compassion and an open mind during the day they spent with intellectually disabled students at the Jai Vakeel Foundation.
They reflected openly on who they are today and what events, experiences and people had shaped them. They articulated their personal visions for the next few years and gained increased clarity on what it would take for them to get there.
Our children then worked with incredible spoken word, music and dance artists to share their stories through an art form of their choice. You can watch a brief snippet of Deepak’s journey from his village, where he was engaged in manual labour, up to the point he began to discover his passion and his voice.
Amidst performing their journeys at bandstand, watching flamingoes at 7 am, going for moonlight walks on Juhu beach, immense critical thought, creativity, laughter, tears and hugs, our children found a little more of themselves, and went forth into the world a little more confidently.
Another important part of their journey is the purposeful support our students have been receiving. Over the last few months, each Maya student has been fortunate enough to be mentored by some incredible people! From authors, actors, explorers and photographers, to entrepreneurs, heads of business, bankers and chemical engineers, each Maya child is receiving emotional support, career advice and now has their own personal champion! We are very hopeful of the power of these relationships and the individualized support they will provide our children!
Thank you mentors and thank you supporters for everything that each of you is doing to enable our children to shine with their brightest light – and through them – everything you are doing to help us move closer to helping All Children Attain An Excellent Education!
With love and gratitude,
