GOSPEL | CULTURE | MISSION
A series through the book of Acts
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” Acts 1:8
When the reality of the Gospel grips His local churches it inevitably creates a culture – a gospel culture – that makes the glory of Christ visible in the world. Yet, in too many churches, this gospel culture is missing. When that happens, churches become fragile at best and hypocritical at worst. So, how do we, by God’s grace, create a culture that reflects the power, beauty, and nature of what God has achieved in Jesus?
We want to invite you to join us for our verse-by-verse study on the Book of Acts. We will see how the gospel transforms the culture, and sends us out on mission, so that the gospel will spread to the ends of the earth.
To help you learn and reflect as we journey through Acts you are invited to pick up a Scripture Journal this Sunday. These journals are available for those who will use them.
Please join us this Sunday as we wrap up our LAST week in Ruth.
Starting November 4, our study in Calvary Institute will be exploring the book that James wrote. Join us as we discuss this book and all the questions it raises. If God is telling a Larger Story throughout His Word, how are all the pieces of that Story woven seamlessly together?
What to Expect
Sola Fides – Faith Alone – was and is one of the slogans summarizing the Reformation. But then what do we do with the letter that James wrote, saying, among other things, “a person is justified by works and not by faith alone”?
Can we trust Scripture to provide us with a consistent, coherent message? Or do we need to be selective in choosing the parts that we like best? If we believe that all parts of the Bible are inspired by the Holy Spirit, how do we fit together such seemingly contrasting ideas?
Calvary Institute meets at 8:30 every Sunday. Child care is provided.
Especially take a look at the "Preparing for Gathered Worship" section. There you will find resources to help you prepare for and process our Sunday morning gathering. We invite you to use the study questions and songs to prepare your heart for worship, to lead your family in study and worship, and to use in your Life Group.
PREPARE FOR GATHERED WORSHIP
Scripture - Acts 2:38-47(ESV)
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
The Fellowship of the Believers
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe[a] came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
"If we’re going to be a living, loving community, it will manifest itself in a loyalty to Christ." - Alistair Begg
We believe that God designed us to be in relationship with one another and that there is simply no substitute for doing life with others in a shared pursuit of honoring God. Life Groups provide a context for people to live out their faith in the support, accountability, and stretching that is inherent in community.
Life Groups are leader-facilitated and typically meet in homes. Activities vary from group to group and week to week but may involve any combination of eating, learning, playing, sharing, celebrating, praying, and serving.
