Caulfield, Holden Sarah jones period 2

Use Somebody By: Kings of Leon

This song can be viewed in many different ways. For this subject it is about being lonely and wanting to be with someone/ being able to talk to someone. Throughout the book Holden is lonely and wants to find companionship with anybody he can. Also he had contemplated for 20 minutes on who he can talk to and ended up not calling anyone. Some might think that a reason as to why he does not call anyone of his "friends" is because he is afraid he will have to talk to someone he does not really like. " I couldn't think of anybody to call up. My brother D.B. was in Hollywood. My kid sister Phoebe goes to bed around nine o'clock— so I couldn't call her up. […] My parents would be the ones [to pick up the phone]. Then I thought of giving Jane Gallagher's mother a buzz, and find out when Jane's vacation started, but I didn't feel like it. Besides, it was pretty late to call up. Then I thought of calling this girl I used to go around with quite frequently, Sally Hayes, because I knew her Christmas vacation had started already—she'd written me this long, phony letter, inviting me over to help her trim the Christmas tree Christmas Eve and all— but I was afraid her mother'd answer the phone. […] Then I thought of calling up this guy that went to the Whooton School when I was there, Carl Luce, but I didn't like him much." He thought about calling 5 people and ended up standing by himself and not calling anyone.

Iris By: The Goo Goo Dolls

In this book we find out that Holden had lost his younger brother Allie who was 11 when he died due to leukemia, Holden was only 12 years old. Due to how old Holden was he had trouble dealing with his younger brothers death. " I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fists, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by that time, and I couldn't do it." This shows how much emotion he had for his brother who he completely adored or how he is mad at himself for letting something happen to Allie or that he is mad at Allie for leaving him alone. He talks of Allie quite a bit throughout the book. He calls Allie, "terrifically intelligent, most intelligent person in the family, the nicest (almost angelic)". He thought so highly of his brother and it was hard for him to deal with his mental and physical state.

Stay Young By: We the Kings

This song suites Holden to a T because he is completely against being an adult or the adult world in its wholesome. He wants to make sure that no kids are sucked into the adult life so he becomes the catcher to make sure that the kids stay kids and enjoy their life. Despite the fact that he is so against adulthood he acts much like an adult himself with the smoking, drinking, and watching over the kids. ""Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all." He feels as though he must watch out for the young kids and also himself.

Life is a Highway By: Rascal Flatts

This represents Holden because he was on his own in New York and did not really have anywhere to go. There are many things he does not like about New York also many things he does not have that he needs for New York. "Lawyers are alright, I guess — but it doesn't appeal to me", I said. "I mean they're alright if they go around saving innocent guys' lives all the time, and like that, but you don't do that kind of stuff if you're a lawyer. All you do is make a lot of dough and play golf and play bridge and buy cars and drink Martinis and look like a hot-shot. And besides, even if you did go around saving guys' lives and all, how would you know if you did it because you really wanted to save guys' lives, or because you did it because what you really wanted to do was be a terrific lawyer, with everybody slapping you on the back and congratulating you in court when the goddam trial was over, the reporters and everybody, the way it is in the dirty movies? How would you know you weren't being a phony? The trouble is you wouldn't.” One thing he hates are phonies which are very abundant in New York but he has to deal with them and figure out how he is going to continue living there.

She's Kinda Hot By: 5 Seconds of Summer

I could not find any appropriate songs about sex for this project because I know there' s a possibility you might watch this with younger children. (They say bitch in the first like 10 seconds). Holden is a young adult who is a normal teenage boy and there are times he is faced with different situations like sex. "I think if you don't really like a girl, you shouldn't horse around with her at all, and if you do like her, then you're supposed to like her face, and if you like her face, you ought to be careful about doing crumby stuff to it, like squirting water all over it. It's really too bad that so much crumby stuff is a lot of fun sometimes. Girls aren't too much help, either, when you start trying not to get too crumby, when you start trying not to spoil anything really good." He is starting to become more mature especially in the way he views women once he understands his feelings.
