Meet the Dancing Guy

Whether you are the "dancing guy", the first follower, or the 100th follower.

Everyone plays an important role in creating a movement.

Who is the leader? Who is the follower?

Who is more important?

Who has shown leadership during the COVID19 pandemic?

Our Jewish tradition teaches us that there are two kinds of leaders:

People who inspire

People who do

What is the difference?

Is one more important then the other?

Why or why not?

Who led us out of Egypt?

What is more important, being the person to start something, or being the first person to join in?

Why is Moses famous and Nachson relatively unknown?

Does it matter?

“No one can lead alone. Seven times in Genesis Chapter 1, we hear the word “tov” (good). Only twice in the whole Torah does the phrase “lo tov” (not good) appear. The first is when God says, “It is not good for man to be alone.” The second is when Jethro sees his son-in-law, Moses, leading alone and says, “What you are doing is not good.” We cannot live alone. We cannot lead alone. Leadership is teamsmanship.”

-Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

1) Why is it impossible to lead alone?

2) Can you think of a situation where you tried to be a leader and no one followed you? What could you do differently?

3) What would Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks think of our current leaders?

Let's Test it out

What does it mean to be a leader or a follower?

What does it mean to do?

What does it mean to inspire?

Trust Walk:

Ask your family to arrange themselves into pairs. Instruct one partner to be the guide (navigator) and the other to be blindfolded. Once the blindfolded partner is ready, slowly spin the person around a few times so that they are unsure which direction they are headed. From this point on, the guide should not touch the partner at all, but rely solely on verbal cues (e.g. “In approximately five steps ahead, there will be a tree branch. Go ahead and step over it slowly.")

PB and J

Write step-by-step instructions to make a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. Get on FaceTime and have your friend follow your directions step by step.

Option 1:

Reflect in writing about if you see yourself as a leader or a follower during these times. Give specific examples of when you were a leader and when you were a follower.

Option 2:

Write a short story about what would the world look like if everyone was a leader and there were no followers?
