It’s game time.

With vaccines being distributed and Covid-19 cases decreasing, Pinewood sports are up and running, albeit things are different this year. There are currently four sports in season: football, girls volleyball, girls tennis, and boys and girls cross country. From March 22 to April 12, boys tennis, swimming, track & field, softball, baseball, boys soccer, girls soccer, boys basketball, and girls basketball will be considered in-season sports. Some sports like track & field, baseball, and softball will continue on into summer, ending June 5.

“When I came to the football game I was honestly almost brought to tears to see the teams playing again,” said Communications Director Kyle Riches.

In fact, tennis, cross country, and football are already competing. Last week there was a tennis match and a cross country meet. The football team had their only home game of the season on March 19.

“When I came to the football game I was honestly almost brought to tears to see the teams playing again,” said Communications Director Kyle Riches. “It was just really cool to see the few spectators we had to see the game.”

Practices will be held two to three times per week and games/matches will be held one to two times per week. For sports that do not have enough players on the team to play in official games, practices will continue weekly to prepare for next school year’s seasons.

All athletes are required to continue to get Covid-19 tested every two weeks. However, some sports might require more frequent testing depending on state and county guidelines.

Due to the California Department of Public Health guidelines, spectators are still not permitted at any of these games. For the outdoor sports, each athlete will be permitted to invite up to two household members for the designated senior night. Although there can be no physical supporters, Pinewood Athletics Department wishes to encourage students to support from afar.
