RING PATTERNS A look back at June 2017

At the all-breed shows In June, collies were awarded one Best in Show, one Highest Scoring Dog in Regular Classes (the first time this year for a collie at an all-breed show), 2 Best Owner-Handled in Show, 32 Group placements and 32 Owner-Handled placements. There were two specialty shows this month, both designated. Central Virginia Collie Club held their back-to-back Specialties in Richmond at Virginia Kennel Club. The breed winner at both specialties was GCH Kelsie Jenver The Nightlight.

Highest Scoring Dog in Regular Classes from Novice B, CH Snovalley Silva Sinkona, BN, RE, TD, PT, NA, NAJ, NF at Five Valley Kennel Club in Montana with a total entry of 52 competing.

Collies placed in the Herding Group 32 times with 1 Best in Show awarded to GCHS Taradells Silent Leader, HT at Alaska Kennel Club under Judge Joan Luna Liebes with 384 in competition. There were also three collies, two smooths and one rough taking four Group 1 awards under Judges Olga Gagne, Eric Liebes, Joan Liebes and Edy Dykstra-Blum. The repeat Group 1 went to GCHS Taradells Silent Leader, HT.

Dana Cline and Olga Gagne were the only two judges this month that placed both the rough and the smooth in the same group. Other placements included 13 group 2s, 7 group 3s, and 8 group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 27 times compared to 5 for the Smooth Variety.

GCHB Alexy Crooked River Midas Touch

The month's largest number of herding dogs shown – 212– at a show in which a collie placed – was Mid-Del-Tinker Kennel Club in Oklahoma on June 30. In this case, the honor went to the Rough Variety. The judge was Charles Olvis whose initial breed was the Old English Sheepdog.

Herding Group judges placed collies 32 times in the AKC's National Owner-Handled Series. Along with the two Best in Show awards, the placements included nine Group 1s, three for the Rough Variety and six for the Smooth Variety. Smooths took 21 of the placements and the Roughs took 11 placements.
