We learn not for school, but for life.
Here at Powhatan School we believe education should inspire passion, curiosity, and creativity.
We believe learning should be active, authentic, immersive, and purposeful. We do this through interdisciplinary thinking, technical acuity, collaboration, and inquiry-based learning.
Most importantly we get children excited about learning!
Research tells us that four and five year olds’ learn through play.
Play Lab consists of several areas of learning. The dramatic play area can be whatever the children want it to be, the art center is supplied with many different materials for creation of anything imaginable, the block area has different sized blocks with various figures to use with any structure you would like to build, and the porch area is always changing and evolving with a water and sand table, easel, and many tools and materials to develop small and large motor skills as well as language acquisition.
The Play Lab represents interdisciplinary, authentic, and self-directed learning for children at this age. Learn more by listening to the podcast from our school blog by clicking the button below!
6:1 Student to Teacher Ratio:
With two classroom teachers in the Pre-K cottage, we have a nurturing 6:1 student to faculty ratio. Small classes allow for more individualization and
Our two outstanding teachers bring a combined 33 years of early childhood teaching experience to Powhatan School.
We invest heavily in our faculty. In order to continue to challenge and engage our students we believe that professional development is an important part of our school culture. By equipping teachers with the tools and 21st Century Skills to continue to innovate projects and units in our curriculum, we help enable our students to succeed in all facets of a Powhatan education. Each year we make time for teachers to attend workshops and activities for teachers to get hands-on experience with best practices in various facets of education. We believe fully that we need to invest in our teacher’s development so that we can invest in our students.
The 5 C's of 21st Century Learning:
We learn not for school, but for life.
The essential components of an excellent education today embody much more than the traditional three R’s. Past President of NAIS, Pat Bassett, identifies Five C’s – critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration and character, as the skills that will be in demand and will be rewarded in this century. “I am a huge fan of his Five C’s and see them constantly across campus," says Mrs. Scarborough, Head of School. "The foundation for all of these skills can be found right here in Pre-Kindergarten."

Children bring their lunch each day and should wear comfortable play clothes. Daily snack is provided.
Admissions: Families interested in the Pre-Kindergarten program should contact Mr. Hatfield in the Office of Admissions to set up a personal tour.
