Dear EDUC 518 students,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to our eight-week exploration of applied educational research. You will learn a great deal in this course and I expect to learn from each of you as well. I enjoy helping others develop their academic writing skills, and I am passionate about the ability of research, especially qualitative research, to tell and interpret stories about observed phenomena in education. I am grateful to God for the opportunity to be a part of your educational and professional journey. You can learn more about my background and interests on the course’s Faculty Information page.
I have a few suggestions for you as you prepare for the start of the course. First, download and read the course syllabus and checklist in their entirety – these documents will provide the foundation for the next eight weeks. I also recommend that you take ten minutes or so to watch the Module 1 presentation, which provides an excellent overview of the course.
First make sure you have completed your financial aid check-in before Friday of this week so you will not be dropped from the course over the week-end.
Second, please make sure that you have the correct text. If you have not already done so, you will also need to purchase the sixth edition of the APA Publication Manual, as all of your writing will need to adhere to current APA standards.
Third, as soon as you log in to the course on Monday, you should complete the Course Requirements Checklist asap as I will begin checking you in Monday evening on the first official day of class. This step is required for you to be officially recorded as present in the course. This assignment will be available on Monday and must be completed by midnight on Wednesday.
Fourth, please review the grading scale and the late policy.
Fifth, please know this course will end on the last Friday of the eight week, and not on a Sunday.
Finally, please take time to pray for me, for your classmates, and for our time together. To this end, it will be very helpful to me if you attach a photo of yourself to your Module 1 discussion board (DB) post. I will use those photos to pray for you individually throughout the course. In addition, please include a word count at the end of all of your DB posts.
I invite you to call or email me at any point throughout the course so that I can answer questions or provide further input or guidance on assignments when needed. Together, I believe we can make this online course as informative and engaging as if we were face to face.
