-Men's Shed Vernon- Hands, Hearts & Minds August 11, 2019

Our Mission: We Build Meaning & Wellness into Men's Lives By Engaging Hands, Hearts & Minds.

Hearts: We Did Some Visiting

It was an historic meeting for MSV on Thursday, August 1st.

David F briefed the guys on the fifteen month process and progress on the efforts to develop the presented agreement for Men's Shed Vernon to become affiliated with the Canadian Mental Health Association. All the guys received an understanding of the benefits and the challenges that both organizations will see by combining our strengths to serve one another, and our community better.

The resulting vote was unanimous! Men's Shed Vernon will officially become a program of the CMHA for the next three years. Now the real work begins to open the new doors that this relationship can take us through.

Thanks to Bill A for cooking up some onion smothered hot dogs afterwards to celebrate!

The kid's interactive honeycomb box that we supplied to Allan Brooks Nature Centre is now in service. The honey bees still need to be painted and attached. The Allan Brooks team also featured MSV in their latest newsletter. Thanks, friends!
Brown Eyes and I took our visiting family up to Allan Brooks Nature centre last week. It was fun and informative.

Hands: We Got Some Stuff Done

Under Phil R's guidance, we are building a podium for an upcoming Pickleball tournament. One of the guys designed this artwork for the CNC router to cut for the podium face. COOL!
Gazebo Project For Local No-Profit Organization:The components are being transferred for assembly at site this week. Come on out and lend a hand.

Catalina 27 Sailboat restoration:

The guys got the exterior all closed in so that the boat could be stored outside again without being flooded. Progress continues.

"Lemon Twist" First Mate skiff update.

Well, after 7 months of being challenged every time I came to the Shed, "Lemon Twist" was complete enough to take home for rigging. Thanks to all the guys for making this, larger than expected project a reality. I'm sure that you'll appreciate the extra floor space.

Look, Murray...It Floats!

Taking my grandson and his parents out for a ride made all the hours worthwhile.

Just a motorboat so far.

It will be a sailboat and a rowboat soon...

Two New Project Opportunities

A Silver Star Rotary guy approached me about refurbishing the wood on this utility trailer that he often borrows from a good friend. Work would be done in October of November.

Opportunity #2: A local social worker has reached out to us on behalf of a worthy single mom of a challenged child. She needs to complete some partially constructed kitchen and bath renovations. I am pursuing additional information.

So... what do you think? Are these projects that we (or you) would like to be involved in? Bring your opinions and thoughts to coffee time at the Shed.

Letter Fabrication:

Lyle and Roy are making progress on streamlining the cutting process. Orders for additional items are coming in...

The guys are feeling a bit overwhelmed by our success...

Let's get more guys trained to run the CNC router, and to fill orders to lighten the load, and get this little enterprise up on it's feet. Let Lyle or Roy know that you would like to get involved.

Minds - Staying Involved

Important MSV Dates:

Conference and Advocacy Opportunity:

Sponsored by The United Way. The second biennial Provincial Summit on Aging (“Summit”) will bring together Community-Based Seniors Services (CBSS) organizations, older adults, family and friend caregivers, academia and government representatives to discuss and collaborate on current issues and innovations in healthy aging. Dates are November 7th & 8th in Richmond, BC.. Okanagan Men's Shed from Kelowna is attending.

We must complete a registration by August 15th, so we need to hear from you if you are interested in attending.

Are You Getting Enough Sleep? The link button below will give you some helpful tips on how to get more rest, and why it is so essential to a good life. We like our guys to show up Sharp at the Shed.

Bring your Fall, Christmas, and winter craft ideas in, so that we can make some people happy, and help offset our overhead..

Think of something unique to Men's Shed that we can start making. What events to we need to attend for the Christmas Season?

So, there you have it. Another two weeks flew by at Men's Shed Vernon, and it was fun. Come on out and help us keep it interesting at Men's Shed Vernon.

Drop me a note if you would like to add, (or delete) a name to our newsletter mailing list. We won't share it. rverlage@gmail.com
