Greenhill School Summer Reading Don't let the summer slide get you down

The Summer Slide is Real

  • Students who do not read over the summer months can lose up to two months of reading skills.
  • The equivalent of one month of overall learning is lost after summer vacation.
  • At the beginning of a school year teachers spend up to six weeks re-teaching old material to make up for summer learning loss.
Hold on to that knowledge!

The good news is that it is pretty easy for students to stop the summer slide:

Read!

The Greenhill Summer reading lists are a great place to start!

Ways to put reading in your summer plans!
  • Encourage your child to read at least 4-6 books this summer
  • Read something every day (a magazine, a comic book, the newspaper, a graphic novel, a how-to manual, recipes, fiction, non fiction; the back of the cereal box)
  • Read aloud to your child, especially your teenager. This is still a wonderful way for you to share family time and discuss issues through the lens of a story
  • Listen to audio books (especially on long trips)
  • Visit your local library and discover some great reads
  • Cook together- reading and understanding recipes builds literacy and using correct measurements can strengthen math skills
  • Research a new hobby and try it out
We've got you covered!
