The Peninsula School District is celebrating some of our most bright and eager learners this September as part of the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Month of the Kindergartner.
“Everything is a first usually and it’s just so fun to watch them light up,” said Hollianne Wieland, a first-year kindergarten teacher at Discovery Elementary this year. “I love that they are so excited to be here every day and the whole world is a mystery to them.”
In addition to practicing academic skills such as literacy and math, modern kindergarten students are working to learn social skills, emotional intelligence and how to succeed in their new role as student.
“It’s important to teach the whole child, not just academics,” Wieland said.
