Tsunamis By: Kevin Kim & Nicholas casson

WHAT ARE TSUNAMIS ?

1. Japanese word
2. 'tsu' = harbor , 'nami' = waves
3. A long high sea wave caused by under water compression between 2 plate tectonics or more

How fast can a tsunAMi travel ?

Up to 500 MPH! That's 804 KM!

HOW ARE TSUNAMIS FORMED?

1. Undersea earthquakes, which typically occur at boundaries between Earth's tectonic plates, cause the water above to be moved up or down. This is one way a tsunami can be formed.
2. Undersea landslides, which can be caused by large earthquakes, can also cause tsunami waves to form as water attempts to find a stable position.
3. Undersea volcano eruptions can create enough force to uplift the water column and generate a tsunami.
4. Asteroid impacts disturb the water from above, as momentum from falling debris is transferred to the water into which the debris falls.

RISKs Of A tsunami

We see here that if a tsunami hits an underdeveloped country, the amount of damage could be CATASTROPHIC!
This bar graph shows that the DEADLIEST tsunami killed about 250 000 people! CRAZY!!! The 6 tsunamis in the chart alone has killed more than 400 000 people!
↓↓↓↓↓ THE BIGGEST TSUNAMI EVER RECORDED! ↓↓↓↓↓
The 1958 Lituya Bay megatsunami occurred on July 9 at exactly 22:15:58, following an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.8! The tsunami was taller than the Empire State Building!

As you can see in the video, Japan, after being hit with about 50 tsunamis, Japan decided to take action and protect themselves by rebuilding mountains and hills to stop the tsunami causing so much damage.

COOL FACTS ABOUT TSUNAMIS

3. In the deepest part of the ocean, tsunami waves are often only 1 to 3 feet tall. Sailors may not even realize that tsunami waves are passing beneath them.
2. While no one has witnessed a tsunami caused by a meteorite, many scientists think that a meteorite may have created a tsunami that wiped out life on Earth more than 3.5 billion years ago.
1. People often die after the first tsunami wave because they return to their homes too soon or go to the beach to help stranded people or animals, only to be engulfed by another tsunami wave.
