The Fear of the Lord Intimacy through holiness

Where are you in this scene?
How would you characterize your relationship with God? Where would you be located in his temple?

Isaiah 6:1-9 NIV - In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy , holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” He said, “Go and tell this people...."

How is God described here?

What is Isaiah's response to God?

What is God's response to Isaiah's response?

God longs to be close with us.

Genesis 1:26 - What does it mean to be created in God's image?

Genesis 3:8-9 - How did God respond to Adam and Eve's rebellion?

Genesis 3:15, 21 - How does God show his longing to be close with us?

Read Genesis 4:1-8

How did God express his desire to be close with Cain and Abel?

"...then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God" (Prov. 2:5).

God wants you to know him!

Exodus 3:1-6 - How does God first reveal himself to Moses?

Left to ourselves we tend immediately to reduce God to manageable terms. We want to get Him where we can use Him, or at least know where He is when we need Him. We want a God we can in some measure control. We need the feeling of security that comes from knowing what God is like, and what He is like is of course a composite of all the religious pictures we have seen, all the best people we have known or heard about, and all the sublime ideas we have entertained. AW Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy

Exodus 19:9-25

Mt. Sinai today

How does God reveal himself to the Israelites?

"...God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen" (1 Tim. 6:15-16).
God is far greater, terrifying, more massive than you could ever imagine. He's far closer, more intimately involved in every detail of your life than you could ever comprehend. The same God created the heights of Everest and details of your DNA. He refuses to be your buddy, because He deeply desires intimacy with you. The mountain-shaking, star-breathing God wants to be with you.

Revelation 4 - Describe God

Revelation 1:12-18 - Describe Jesus

God wants us to know him.

  • John 1:14, 17-18
  • Hebrews 4:15
  • 1 Peter 2:22

How can we know him?

God has always made a way for us to come close.

Hebrews 12:14 - "... without holiness no one will see the Lord."

1 Corinthians 5:21

Holiness is possible (because of Jesus).

1 Peter 1:15-16 - But is holiness really possible?
The fear of the Lord is a reaction or response to the holiness of God. It is the only appropriate response to his holiness and will bring us into intimate relationship with a Holy God.

Psalm 76:11; Psalm 76:7; Psalm 60:4; Leviticus 9:24; Exodus 20:20; Nehemiah 5:9; Acts 9:31; Proverbs 2:1-5; Proverbs 19:23; Proverbs 16:6; Proverbs 14:2; Proverbs 9:10; Proverbs 8:13; Genesis 22:12; Isaiah 11:3; Proverbs 14:26; Proverbs 29:25; Proverbs 28:14; Psalm 33:8; Proverbs 24:21; Psalm 34:7, 9, 11, 19; Proverbs 10:27; Psalm 25:12

What can we learn about the fear of the Lord?

You can't have intimate friendship with God without the fear of the Lord.

How is intimacy developed?

over time.... learning to love what the other person loves.... learning to hate what they hate

How does God feel about the sin that separates us from him?

Read Revelation 3:14-22

Read Jeremiah 5:22-25

Read Hosea 3

Read James 4:4-10

How do we feel about the sin that separates us from God?

The object of our devotion is what we become.

We sin because we love it more than God.

A lack of the fear of the Lord means walking with idols. Ultimately, we ending up worshipping ourselves.

“The fear of the Lord means to have God’s attitude toward sin- to hate it, and at the same time to have a deep respect and understanding of His holiness”- Joy Dawson

What does God hate? Sin. Some specifics - Proverbs 6:16; 8:13

A Story

The Gibonian Deception

Your thought life

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NIV

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Fear of the Lord in our Thought Life

  • Pride
  • Lust
  • Judgement / Accusation
  • Unbelief
  • Anxiety / Worry
  • Comparison
  • Rebellion
  • Murder

Your mind is the gateway for sin or righteous living. Are you guarding your gates?

Thoughts becomes Words which become your Actions which become your Habits which become your Character which becomes your Destiny.

Romans 8:5 - Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

Romans 12:2 - Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.
