The MDGs (Millennium Development Goals)
In September 2000, More than 180 world leaders signed the historic millennium declaration at the United Nations. They committed to achieving eight goals that range from radication of extreme poverty to promoting gender equality and reducing child mortality, in 15 years.
Were the millennium development goals a success?
The revolutionary results of MDGs and also the new approach towards international cooperation through MDGs encouraged the world leaders to expand the program. they decided to carry on the momentum generated by teh MDGs towards a global sustainable development plan beyond 2015. In July 2014, the UN General Assembly Open Working Group (OWG) proposed a document containing 17 goals to be put forward for the General Assembly’s approval in September 2015. This become the ground for the new Sustainable Development Goals from 2015 to 2030. It is known as 2030 agenda.
