DISTRICT-WIDE STUDENTS

Fourteen Future Problem Solving teams from Muscatine qualified to attend the Iowa Global Issues Problem Solving State Bowl on April 21 and 22. The students spent hours in a written competition, created and performed skits based on their action plans, and enjoyed a taste of college life on the Iowa State University campus. Congratulations for making it to the State Bowl!

McKINLEY ELEMENTARY

During their library lesson, Mrs. Bloomquist sent kindergarten, first, and second grade students on an egg hunt! They worked in small teams to find their eggs, and then had to unscramble the message inside. This activity definitely earned a lot of thumbs up!

-------------------------------------------

Mrs. Strouf's 1st graders were learning about synergizing while also doing a S.T.E.M. activity where groups had to design a playground using unifex cubes. Then we practiced doing a gallery walk!

-------------------------------------------

McKinley's 4th grade TRIBES meet every Wednesday at McKinley. TRIBES are groups of students that meet with a teacher to do team building activities and to create relationships.

-------------------------------------------

Fourth graders in Mrs. DeVrieze's class braved the cold and went to Wildcat Den yesterday! We learned about our local history, experienced school in a one room building, learned how to grind corn into flour, and tried out some new tools. It was a great experience for all of us!

McKinley staff and students love Mrs. Gaeta and Mrs. Shield! Here they show their appreciation during Administrative Professional's Day.

CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Gifted and Talented students at CMS have been working all semester to organize a community service project. The students researched trees native to Muscatine, collaborated with staff from Muscatine Parks and Rec., raised funds and purchased a tree, and finally, planted a tree at Brooke Street Park in recognition of Arbor day. After recent storms in our area, the students found a need to replant trees as a way to give back to our community that can be enjoyed for years to come.

-------------------------------------------

This week sixth grade students from Central Middle School participated in Monsanto's Ag Safety Day. Students learned about protecting their bodies by making wise choices such as wearing safety goggles, turning down their earbuds, putting on a helmet when riding a bicycle or ATV, and always buckling their seat belts. In addition to learning more about how to be safe, students got to meet the Ag Center animals and enjoy a fantastic lunch. Thanks to the employees from Monsanto and to the high school ag students and staff for providing a great day of learning!

-------------------------------------------

7th graders from Central Middle School went to the University of Iowa and participated in a STEM day. They met with doctors, geneticists, and held human organs! They also participated in a career day at Central Middle School. A variety of professionals came in and talked about their career- firefighters, police officers, bankers, hair stylists are only a few of the professions talked about!

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL

Students in Mrs. Plemmons' class enjoy Dundee, West's new service dog, and having fun with Mrs. Bloomquist, West's teacher librarian.

-------------------------------------------

Ms. Matteson's sixth grade ELA students were asked to wear their college gear along with their teachers this Friday. The classes discussed the importance of striving for a college degree, and they made lists of what they might like to major in and where they might like to go to college someday.

-------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------

West Middle School 7th grade students toured the University of Iowa campus this week, learning about the different degrees offered, as well as the clubs, activities and sports students can participate in. Students also played a game of Jeopardy to test their memory about U of I facts they learned during a presentation.
