Welcome to Kennedale High School's Green Club

So… What is Green Club?

Green Club is a student organization that focuses on plant and student life! We hope to do our part, however small it may be, to help the environment and to keep Kennedale High School green and beautiful. Green Club promotes the well-being of our environment by empowering students to take up environmental activities and projects as well as gardening. We work with other clubs like Student Council on fun projects that keep our school clean and environmentally friendly as well as upkeep the garden at the front of the school.

Plant / animal of the month and fun gardening facts!!!

Plant: Amorphophallus Titanum (a-more-fo-fallus tie-ta-num), also known as Titan Arum or the Corpse Flower, is the largest plant in the world and is found only in the equatorial rainforest of Sumatra, Indonesia. They are extremely rare and world-famous for their horrific stench. Because they are so rare and are grown so far apart, they must attract a lot of insects to digest and do so by releasing its a “rotting corpse/flesh” smell to ensure pollination.

Animal: Rinopythicus strykeri, also known as Myanmar Snub-Nosed Monkeys or “Sneezing Monkeys” are a critically-endangered species of Columbine Monkey that was discovered in 2010. They are known for their upturned noses and supposedly sneeze a lot due to the short upturned nasal flesh surrounding its little nose. The species is known in local dialects of Lisu people as “mey nwoah” and Law Waw people as “myuk na tok te”, both of which mean "monkey with an upturned face".

  • Fun gardening facts:
  • Some soil contains healthy microbes, including Mycobacterium vaccae, that make you happy by stimulating your serotonin production.
  • A teaspoon of soil holds more bacteria than there are people on Earth

How is this going to work (covid-19 edition)

Obviously, due to COVID-19, KHS has been going under some changes to keep the students best interests at mind and keep everyone safe. Green Club is not exempt from that. This year, until further notice, all our meetings will be held completely virtually on the 2nd Friday of every month. Obviously, we can’t tend to a garden over Zoom or Google Meets, so we will, as per usual, break into 5 optional Garden Rotation groups (more on this later).

Currently we’re planning on only having afternoon meetings at 4 pm, but we are considering also holding an option for before school meetings. Because we hold meetings on a Friday, we can’t hold meetings during study hall and they would be held before first period starts at ~7:15-7:30 am. There will be a form at the end of the presentation for you to vote on whether or not you believe we should hold morning meetings

Garden Rotations (covid-19 edition)

Green Club does take care of a pocket prairie and school garden that is just outside of the cafeteria and near the picnic tables. In order to take care of said garden, we will split up into 5 rotations, each under an officer. In the form at the end, you can choose whose rotation you’d like to be in. Due to COVID, this year rotations are *not mandatory* but if you can come, please do so nobody is tending to the garden alone!! The rotation schedule is starting the week of October 12th-16th, after our first official Green Club Meeting on Friday, October 9th

We’re going to try to put you in your first choice for your rotation group, but in an effort to keep all the groups even in size, please know that it may not be possible!
