Welcome back! As you look at the academic year ahead, we're sure you have some questions. The goal of our monthly newsletter is to provide you valuable information to help you stay up to date with important news as it becomes available.

Our Team

Bonnie Toliver - Director of College Counseling, Ebony Lovett - Associate Director of College Counseling, Laura Rich - Associate Director of College Counseling, Jennifer Peterson - College Counseling Coordinator

Welcome Mrs. Rich and Ms. Lovett!

This summer we were blessed to grow our College Counseling team with the addition of Mrs. Laura Rich and Ms. Ebony Lovett. Prior to joining the WolfPack, Mrs. Laura Rich co-founded an independent college counseling firm and worked as a college counselor at St. Agnes Academy in Houston, Texas for six years. Before accepting her position at St. Agnes, she was an admissions counselor at The University of Texas at Austin. Mrs. Rich holds a M.Ed in Counseling from The University of St. Thomas and a B.A in Art History and Music Performance from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she developed her love of college counseling as a tour guide and admissions ambassador.

Ms. Ebony Lovett is a graduate of Florida State University, where she began her career in admissions. Having worked at several institutions of higher education, Ms. Lovett has most recently worked in the admissions office for the University of Illinois. Having visited Whitefield previously to recruit our students, Ms. Lovett was attracted to Whitefield because of what she saw in our students – their strong faith in Christ, educational preparation, and values and manners. She holds a master’s degree in business intelligence and analytics

Thank You to Mrs. Langella!

Over the past five years, we have been blessed to have Jill Langella lead our signature Vocare program at Whitefield Academy. Mrs. Langella shepherded our students through a process of exploring and evaluating their unique areas of giftedness and how God has called them to use these in their future. This past May, Mrs. Langella retired and has left us with some big shoes to fill! We are excited about what our Vocare program allows us to discover with your students and look forward to the continued growth of this program.

Junior Updates

WELCOME TO VOCARE

A hallmark of the Upper School experience is our signature Vocare Program, an extensive process through which junior students actively assess, explore, and evaluate their unique areas of giftedness prior to navigating the senior-year college application process. We will be partnering with the Christian Thought class for Vocare.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING IN AUGUST:

  • (Aug 23 – Oct 14) – Vocare classes meet during Christian Thought
  • Students take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (approximately 20 minutes to complete) and the YouScience Assessment (approximately 90 minutes to complete) at Junior Seminar

We look forward to providing you with full details of Vocare during the Junior Parent Meeting on September 14, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Building the College List

Building a college list first begins with understanding what makes each college unique. This helps students understand what is going to offer the best fit for them. Some colleges are beginning to offer on-campus tours and information sessions to prospective students. For more information on the excused absence policy for on-campus visits, please refer to the Family Handbook. We also encourage you and your student to use some of your time this fall exploring virtual college tours. Use these opportunities to explore schools you are familiar with as well as be sure to explore some schools you may have never dreamed of visiting in person, like the University of St. Andrews in Scotland or Willamette University in the Pacific Northwest. Encourage your student to look beyond what they are familiar with - they may find something extraordinary!

College Fairs

As you and your student look at beginning to craft their college application list consider attending virtual college fairs or setting up a virtual campus visit.

Standardized Testing Updates

Many colleges moved to a test optional policy for the fall of 2021. Because these policies are new and each school will evaluate applications differently, please discuss the option of applying test optional with Mrs. Toliver, Mrs. Rich or Ms. Lovett. A complete list of schools that are test optional for the fall of 2022 can be found at FairTest.org

We anticipate the SAT and ACT being offered over the coming months. Please refer to CollegeBoard.org and ACT.org for specifics and the most up to date information on registration and testing dates.
