Leo IX

His desire to hold synods, or church council, and his travels around Europe earned him the nickname of “The Pilgrim Pope.”

Leo IX died on April 19, 1054, shortly after his return to Rome, was successful by Victor II.

Even after his death, Leo IX’s military and papal actions triggered the final split between the Eastern & Western Churches, known as the Great Schism of 1054.

St.Dominic

Acquired contemplation is the tranquil abiding in the presence of God, & is an integral part of any full human life.

His fellow preachers gradually became a community, & in 1215 he founded a religion house at Toulouse, the beginning of the Order of Preacher (Dominicans).

Dominic sensed the need for the Church to combat this heresy, and was commissioned to be part of the preaching crusade against it.

St. Francis of Assisi

During his life he also developed a deep love of nature & animals & is known as the patron saint of the environment & animals; his life & words have had a lasting resonance with millions of followers across the globe.

In 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio chose to honor St. Francis by taking his name, becoming Pope Francis.

In 1202, war broke between Assisi & Perugia, & Francis eagerly took his pace with the cavalry. Little did he know at the time, his experience with war would change him forever.
