Room 113 Falcon Family Newsletter April 24-28

Hello Room 113 Families!

Here we are at the last week of April. Wow, is the year ever racing by! With the month of May on the horizon, we're hearing the OV’s marching band’s current competition tune, “School’s Out for Summer,” but we’ll be focused on packing the time we have left with many activities alongside standardized testing. Here are the plans for this week.

If you have not already, please return the outer envelope of your child's report card to school so it can be reused at the end of the year.

•April 3-28 Aquasox Reading Program Continues, ends on the 28th!

•April 24-28 MEPTSA and SOAR Senate Food Drive: Please send in non-perishable foods to help our neighbors in need who visit the Food Bank. There are prizes for the classrooms who synergize to bring in the most food!

•April 27 ME Talent Show at 6:30 PM in the gym

May 1-31 Earth Month – Weekly challenges sponsored by the MEco Voice Group to focus on reducing trash on campus, reducing energy consumption, choosing energy conscious modes of transportation, and increasing our recycling, reusing and reducing garbage habits.

Unit 8: Geometry and Measurement

This week we’ll explore volume by visualizing what measuring volume means before applying the formula (l x w x h) to find volume of rectangular prisms and of composite solid figures. Students will build prisms with centimeter blocks, and will work on calculating volume from given measurements as well as applying volume to a variety of real life situations.

Reading and Social Studies

In light of the upcoming testing season, we’ll look at sample reading questions on both literary and informational texts over the next couple of weeks so students have a familiarity with the type of questions they’ll be seeing on the Smarter Balanced Assessment next month.

Independent reading – at least 30 minutes per day, and at least 150 minutes/pages per week remains a daily assignment - sometimes accomplished in class, but a daily assignment nonetheless. Students record their progress related to their reading goal, noted on the front of each log, as they read the book, and in addition, they record their thinking as they make their way through each quadrant of the book on the back. FYI - Both the log and the TOPS report (an online comprehension test report) are turned in after the student takes the A/R test on their independent reading book. I make comments on the log/report, return them to the students, and then these reports are stored under the reading tab in the leadership pages section of their binder. The reading log is a part of the trimester reading grade as it documents student application of skills learned in lessons and gives me a chance to comment and connect with each student as they read, noting their successes and suggesting new goals.

Writing: Fantasy Fiction

Content: Lessons on making final revisions to fantasy fiction short stories will comprise the work in writing this week before students publish into a booklet form. Published drafts are due on Friday, April 28.

Spelling/Conventions: All students will study the same sort focusing on Greek Roots, but will have different assignments based on their needs as a speller. Studying Greek Roots will not only help students as spellers, writers and readers, but will also help them with upcoming science lessons.

Science: Environments-Terrariums

Terrestrial environment investigations continue this week as students explore the environmental factors that affect organisms in terrariums (germination in plants) and in runways constructed to test environmental preferences in isopods (wood lice and pill bugs) and darkling beetles. Observations and application of the scientific method will be part of daily work in science.
