WHAT WAS THE FIRST AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION?

THE NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION

  • 8000 BC
  • THIS REVOLUTION TAUGHT PEOPLE TO FARM
  • IT CHANGED PEOPLE'S LIVES BY: 1) THEY COULD STORE THEIR FOOD EASIER 2) THEY COULD ESTABLISH PERMANENT SETTLEMENTS 3) AND THEIR FOOD SOURCE(S) WERE MORE RELIABLE

Early Crops:

WHEAT
OLIVES

WHAT WAS THE SECOND AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION?

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

  • WESTERN EUROPE - 1600's
  • NORTH AMERICA - 1800's
  • IT CHANGED FARMING BY BRINGING NEW METHODS SUCH AS CROP ROTATION, BETTER HORSE COLLARS, NEW MACHINES, SUPPLEMENT NATURAL FERTILIZERS, AND PESTICIDES WITH CHEMICALS

FIRST MACHINES:

TRACTOR

WHAT WAS THE THIRD AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION?

THE GREEN REVOLUTION

  • BEGAN IN THE EARLY 1940's-50's
  • MORE BETTER SEEDS, FERTILIZERS, AND PESTICIDES WERE INVENTED TO MAKE FARMING NOT AS A HASSLE
  • NEW MACHINERY WAS CREATED ALONG WITH THE SEEDS/FERTILIZERS

BETTER/NEW FORMS OF MACHINERY

IRRIGATION
FERTILIZER(S)

GMO'S

- GMO - GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM: AN ORGANISM WHOSE GENOME HAS BEEN ALTERED BY THE TECHNIQUES OF GENETIC ENGINEERING

  • GMO'S HELPED FARMERS BECAUSE IT BROUGHT NEW METHODS OF PROTECTING THEIR CROPS AGAINST HARMFUL CONDITIONS.
  • GOOD: - HERBICIDES HELP REPEL ANIMALS FROM CROPS. - FERTILIZERS HELP TO INCREASE YOUR YIELD OF CROPS.
  • BAD: - POISONED THE SOIL, NOT ALLOWING SOME TYPES OF CROPS TO GROW. - IF IT GETS INTO LOCAL WATERWAYS IT CAN CAUSE DEFORMITIES IN POND LIFE.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUBSISTENCE, SUSTAINABLE, AND COMMERCIAL FARMING

  1. SUBSISTENCE FARMING: GROWING ENOUGH CROPS FOR YOU/YOUR FAMILY TO SURVIVE.
  2. SUSTAINABLE FARMING: ALSO KNOWN AS ORGANIC FARMING, SUSTAINABLE FARMING IS USING TECHNIQUES THAT PROTECT THE FARMING ENVIRONMENT.
  3. COMMERCIAL FARMING: TO GROW AND SELL CROPS FOR MONEY AND BUSINESS PURPOSES.

FUN FACTS ABOUT AGRICULTURE:

  1. The average person consumes 584 pounds of dairy products a year
  2. There are 350 squirts in a gallon of milk.
  3. Today's American farmer feeds about 155 people worldwide. In 1960, that number was 25.8.
  4. Pork is the most widely eaten meat in the world.
