#VisitBanksy in der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart

Was bleibt vom Kunstmarkt-Hype?

Few contemporary artists have generated bigger news headlines recently than the British street artist Banksy. Despite the intense media attention, he has successfully kept his name and identity hidden and continues to leave many questions unanswered. His latest stunt, the self-destruction of hisBalloon Girlat an auction in October 2018, has been described as ‘quite possibly the biggest prank in art history’ and has given rise to widespread discussion. Acquired by a European collector who wishes to remain anonymous, the work is on long-term loan to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, where its display encourages public debate. Presented in the museum context, it has to stand up to key works from the history of art – from Rembrandt to Duchamp and from Holbein to Picasso.

The identity of the artist operating internationally under the pseudonym Banksy is unknown to this day. Nevertheless, with his graffiti in the public space, his actions and his statements in the social media, Banksy attracts great attention. The media hype reached its peak at the auction of his work Girl with Balloon and the subsequent artistic action consisting in its partial destruction.

Thought to have been born in Bristol in 1974, Banksy is credited with graffiti in a variety of places – from Bristol and London, to locations in France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Mali and the U.S. Although he often emphasizes his particular interest in the unrestricted public visibility of his works, a number of the latter have meanwhile been destroyed or removed from their original contexts. As an artist he addresses a multitude of themes. He not only examines political and socio-critical issues, but with his actions also sparks discussion about the art market and its mechanisms. What is more, he has repeatedly shone a critical light on the museum institution by means of unauthorized placements of his works in public collections such as the Tate Modern or the Louvre. In the Staatsgalerie, Banksy's work Love is in the Bin will now be on view for the first time in dialogue with masterpieces of past epochs, where it will have to stand its ground in juxtapositions and discussions.

Von »Ballonmädchen« bis »Love is in the Bin«

At an auction at Sothebys on 5 October, 2018, Girl with Balloon – one of the bestknown graffiti motifs in Banksy’s oeuvre was put up for sale. Shortly after a European collector won the bid, however, the work on paper was largely destroyed by a hidden shredder before the eyes of the audience. After the auction, Banksy used his YouTube channel to announce his original intention to destroy the work completely and renamed it Love is in the Bin.

The motif of Girl with Balloon – a little girl stretching her hand out towards a red, heart-shaped balloon is a recurring one in Banksy's oeuvre and since 2002 has been turned up at various locations in London. It has gained widespread popularity, thanks in good part to its reproduction on numerous art prints, postcards and posters as well as on the back cover of the album Think Tank by Blur, released in 2003. Girl with Balloon also became a political symbol in 2014 when Banksy modified the motif and supplemented it with the hashtag #WithSyria to draw attention to the plight of the civil war refugees from Syria.

In our museum, »Love Is in the Bin« will now be placed on view and put up for discussion in various contexts within the collection.
Banksy vs. Meisterwerke der Kunstgeschichte

Finden Sie das Werk in unserer Sammlung? Eine erste Station macht »Love Is in the Bin« neben einem Alten Meister.

Can you find the artwork in our collection? Its first stop is next to one of our Old Masters. In our collection there is one artist who like no other artist before him, used his art to scrutinise his own self. His self-portraits were not only highly sought after by collectors, they also helped raise his profile and spread his fame. Banksy’s name and identity, on the other hand, remain unknown, and the carefully guarded secret forms the backbone of the Banksy brand. His much-publicised prank of shredding his iconic Balloon Girl just seconds after the auctioneer’s gavel dropped raises the question as to whether the artist was present at the auction and whether he personally triggered the work’s destruction.

The two artists are very different. Their marketing strategies could not be more unalike, but both were/are hugely successful. In pursuing his stunts and interventions, Banksy refuses to adopt the time-honoured role of the artist as a charismatic and visible public figure. Are both strategies viable today?
