The Influence of instagram Instagram's negative effect on teenage girls

by Kate Schultz

Instagram is the fastest growing social media app today, used by millions of teenage girls around the world.

Instagram’s focus on photos and videos causes girls to compare themselves to others, which commonly causes an unhealthy effect on teenage girls.

Teenage girls compare themselves to the edited photos of women they see on a daily basis since many believe that beauty is based on likes.

Looking at pictures of other women everyday may not just result in a dissatisfaction with one’s body; it can also result in much more serious outcomes such as depression and eating disorders.

Seeing hundreds of beautiful photos of women on Instagram may even cause some girls to end up getting plastic surgery when they cannot achieve the look they desire.

Persistently educating teenage girls about the harmful effects of Instagram will hopefully influence them to use it less frequently or to even delete the app completely.
