Power up your Painting Jan Martin McGuire teaching at the TexArt workshop in May

Acrylics

Jan Martin McGuire is the Acrylics Instructor at the TexArt Workshop, this coming May 22 - 27, in Kerrville, Texas.

Jan Martin McGuire has been a full time professional artist for almost 35 years. Initially she worked in graphite and etchings, but decided early on that she needed to express herself with color. She had used all the different media in college, but she still sort of "tested" them all out again. She found that watercolours need to be planned ahead of time. Jan tends to change her mind multiple times during the course of a painting. Oils were out all together. Acrylics fit her personality and the way she thinks.

During the course of this 5 day seminar - Jan will share with you how she became who she is - to help you to understand and draw on your own life experiences to create better art. She will teach you all about acrylics... specifically by showing you some techniques she uses to create texture. You will be able to "paint along" if you desire to test out how to do them yourself.

Jan will then begin a demo painting which she will work on the rest of the class. She will talk about what she is doing - as well as tell stories and other tidbits that will keep you entertained as you learn. Jan is by no means boring!

She will work with you in painting on your own as well. However... she prefers you do not bring something you have already started. Instead - she prefers you start "fresh" using her techniques.

She will be giving critiques for anyone who wants them - she prefers to do it for the whole class. While that may feel intimidating, Jan is great at giving constructive critiques - and the whole class can learn. This can be done with paintings, or digital files.

Jan will then show you in a few basic steps on how to utilize Photoshop to combine reference photos, what to watch for in lighting, or photos that have problems and how to spot them.

Jan's extraordinary studio painting skill is supported by her amazing in-depth field work, mainly in Africa.

Jan will also be sharing her working experiences in the "Business of Art", how she has become successful and considered one of the best in her field.

Jan's husband, internationaly collected wildlife photographer James Gary Hines will be assisting Jan during the course of the seminar - and will himself give a brief lecture on how to use your camera to collect the best reference.

Comments about Jan Martin McGuire

"It was a turning point in my career and I would recommend it to any artist who wishes to become more professional both with their camera and with their artwork." Sally Maxwell

"Not only did I have tons of fun, I learned so much. I think all beginners and seasoned professionals interested in wildlife art should take this kind of workshop. I learned invaluable camera settings and James was so helpful, my photographs blow me away. Thank you for sharing you talent and skills as an artist. I feel I have learned techniques and standards from the best." Rose Tanner

Robert Bateman “There are a lot of painters out there but only a tiny percent of those that I would call a true artist. Jan Martin-McGuire is one of the few. She is truly an artist for two reasons. The obvious one is that she has the necessary skills and talents but the most important reason is that she paints that which is important in her life. Too much so-called art is a bunch of interior decorating. Jan’s work comes from her heart. A big piece of her heart belongs in Africa. I could say this about myself, having been there over a dozen times. But Jan’s work leaves me in awe. Many of her African paintings are truly stunning in their drama."

"Over the span of a quarter century, it has been exciting, for a viewer, to watch Jan Martin McGuire evolve and mature as a wildlife painter. She's gone from being a mere member of the pack to now being at the forefront of it. Her compositions are original and her style distinctive. She is one artist who puts in a lot of field time and it shows. I look forward to every new painting coming off her easel." Todd Wilkinson, Environmental journalist and former editor of Wildlife Art Journal magazine, former columnist for WILDLIFE ART magazine, and currently a featured columnist about art in the Safari Club Magazine.

"Jan Martin McGuire is among the top women artists focusing on wildlife today. Her perennial presence in top museum-quality exhibitions is proof of her status in the wildlife art world." David Wagner - Leading wildlife art scholar, author and museum curator
