My Time With The Divine By: Brenda Lupo

The Spatial Experience:
Entering the Constans Theatre for the first time filled me with excitement. I had participated with musicals in high school, but our theatre was very small. Seeing the elegance, artwork in the theatre lobby, and size of the theatre the my professionalism and standards for the show quickly rose. I was seated all the way in the right side section of seats. I enjoyed watching the play from a slightly side view instead of straight on. I got to have my very own perspective/angle of the performers. As the house lights dimmed and the audience quieted, I got the same quick mixed feeling of excitement, nerves, and anxiousness I would get right before my musicals would begin. That moment right before the show begins you can sense so much in the air the nerves of the actors waiting to come on stage and the excited members of the audience getting ready to be immersed into the play. With the Good Life, the role of place comes into play in establishing how one is going to interact with their surroundings. New places can sometimes be scary for some, but it is important to be open and trying new things in order to gain more life experiences that led one to the Good Life.
The Social Experience:
I attended the performance by myself. Being at the performance by myself I feel helped me focus more on the performance and eliminated any possible distractions. My friends actually went to see the performance before me for their theatre appreciation class. I liked that we were able to discuss the performance after the fact. To prepare myself for the performance I read the "The Divine Study Guide" provide to better familiarize myself with the characters and plot. In the Good Life, shared experiences are a big part of shaping who you become and also help you realize who you want to share the experiences with. Sharing experiences with the ones you care about I think makes them all the more special and memorable.
The Cultural and Intellectual Experience:

The Divine addressed several social issues including working conditions, child labor, authority of the church, and sexual abuse. I feel that the central issue throughout the performance was sexual abuse because when the main character, Talbot, revealed his history of sexual abuse everything else in the play made sense. For example, as Talbot arrived to the Grand Seminar he was quite jumpy and almost aggressive towards others. Then hearing Talbot's history I understood that it was all of fear from the past. Sexual abuse is unfortunately present within our society of it, but no one really speaks of it and especially of male sexual abuse. The performance strengthened my view that victims should not be suppressed and justice must be served. The subject matter does not have a relationship to anything happening in my own life.
The Emotional Experience:
The Divine: A Play for Sarah Bernhardt provided us an opportunity for katharsis by putting on a performance that brought together a diverse group of people to watch a storyline come to life that we could find ways to relate to. Sometimes when we hear about things we think nothing of it. By watching an entire cast in costumes, full set, and acting out the scenorios the audience is more involved and invest with the storyline leading them to find ways to relate to it. By seeing something happen right in front of you that has happened to you too and seeing the actors solutions assists the audience in finding ways to deal with something.
